Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony confirms internal depletion 60 GB PS3 supply, 80 gig price drop?

I think 399 is a real possiblity next spring but I just can't imagine another cut this fall. People seem to forget that the 60gig units have all been produced some time ago and are most certainly produced at the top end of their production cost. Sure, production costs are coming down (and probably fairly quickly given the extremely high initial price) but most or all of these 60 giggers were produced much earlier in the process and hence are quite a bit more expensive to "liquidate". If they were to drop the price to $399 before Christmas, it would cost them dearly in terms of dollars lost per console as well as give the marketplace a general feeling that Sony is desperate -- two price cuts in 6 months and within the 1st year of introduction. I think the financial and fanboy press will eat them alive.

Once Sony clears the old inventory (and books the loss), they would be in a much better position to say that they have significantly reduced costs and can lower the price on the "new" hardware without looking desperate and creating a lot of positive momentum. At that time, if they said it, it would actually be true...

Just my .02. Keep the change.

Kaz said in a video interview that they'll maintain a single SKU strategy from now so we will not be seeing a 40 GB or 100 GB model unless they discontinue the new 80 GB model.

This whole 40 GB is a rumor perpetuated by a MS exec.

No that roumer came from gameinformer, a month before e3. They need to have a $399.99 model out there sooner or later. March is likely, but anything is possible.

There won't be a 40GB PS3. There's no reason to introduce another SKU at this point in time nor is there a reason to drop the price again right before the holidays.

The 80GB PS3 will have Motorstorm removed after Christmas and be dropped to $499, and then $399 in April when bigger titles hit.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

so you expect them to make a 200 dollar price drop, before 1 years time or at latest 1 years time to european launch. Not happening unless they are really hurting, it would be an admission of failure.

I would say at soonest you will see another drop in 14 months. even that would be very early.

it took the 360 over a year to get a price drop, it will take the wii over a year to get a price drop. the sony price drop this year was, and should be seen as a desperate move. The whole reason europe got packins was it would have had a negative backlash effect taking a price cut so soon there. Game packins cost less than the 100 dollars that they would have dropped the console.

I don't believe they ran out of PS3 60GB.
There were 2,62 m consoles shipped to America till march '07.
According to Vgchartz there are 1,87 m consoles shipped so there are still 1m consoles on the shelves.

@goddog

They arent loosing much if any on the 80gb in terms of money.. you see since motorstorm is there game it doesnt cost them much, the 80gb ps3 is at $599.99, no EE lowers the cost a bit. So I think they arent losing anywhere near that 200dollar range maybe 50 or 60.. but not so much, and the 360 was REALLY HURTING microsoft, so it dropped when it started to make money.

@Lord N

Thats an easy way to do it. But I think the 80gb alone will be released for $549.99 in chirstmas, because not all the motorstorm ps3's will be sold out. Then by march it might be at $449.99 or maybe $399.99(this is were ps3 will shoot up like a rocket).

Ps3 is not getting another price drop this year, we won't see the 80 gig get dropped until next year. $400 is a long ways away, certainly more than a year.

thibje - read the article, all they did was clear their warehouses by selling them to retailers. Retailers are going to stock up for the increase in sales, and even earlier in the year with the financial reports we saw Sony had more than 2 million PS3s sent from warehouses that hadn't sold yet.

MS had been making money on the 360 premium for about 6 months. I think the core was the only one they weren't and it wasn't that much of a loss.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

@goddog - To do the stuff we are talking about in this thread, It would only be a $100 cut but applied to original 20GB model @ $499. (NO wifi or memcard reader)

Yeah, I never trust anyone that actually types M$. I see that and I think giant tool.

 why, we all know M$ arethe greediest pos company in the world

reasons:

1. All their OSs fail to work 100% correctly, fear the blue screen and data corruption.

2. Original Xbox, while being build to actually not fail, was the size of first gen VCR. MASSIVE

3. Xbox 360, while taking a smaller size, has a fail rate as high as their operating system.

4. The bought thousands of patents with the solo purpose to stop open source coding and small companies from creating software thats superior to their software in everywa. (OpenOffice.org for example)

5. DX10 is pointless but they are making the world upgrade to it.. opinion.. wait till DX11. (see Valve's statement)
