Forums - Gaming - Emulation and modding is about to be revolutionized

Powerful new AI models have caused wild things to start happening in those areas. For the former PS5 emulation progress is currently skyrocketing with games like Demon's Soul's and Astro Bot already most of the way there to 60fps so emulation of that is gonna start getting good a lot faster compared to the PS4 while for the latter stuff like this Elden Ring mod is being made. There's been tons of mods like that getting shared on social media the past few days and the most insane part is that the best models a year from now will completely blow GPT-6 and Opus 5.5 out of the water so things are about to get outright bonkers.

There's also been rapid progress in game decompilation recently so there's a bunch of cool advancements happening in video games lately thanks to this tech getting very capable at coding. In general this stuff is advancing so quickly that I have no idea what the medium of video games will be like 5-10 years from now so we're about to enter some truly crazy times.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that one, and I'm not sure console makers are prepared for what's to come. Impossible mods aside, decompiling and emulating a game will become easier and easier until anyone can do it for cheap and from scratch for new games and current platforms.

I'm not sure there would be legal grounds to prevent models from doing these tasks when prompted, not to mention that ~9 months after the frontier models get there, the Chinese open models will be able to do the same thing with fewer guardrails regardless.

The day that Astro Bot becomes playable on PC at a stable 60FPS... oh man. That just sounds too good. With all the native ports incoming due to "AI vibe coding", I can only imagine we may even see an unlimitied FPS release in the not-too-distant future.

Right cause at this rate Laufey might be playable day 1 and I'm sure Sony didn't think that was even a remote possibility as recently as a few months ago. It's currently super demanding but the hardware requirements will come down over time and with the way things are going it wouldn't surprise me if PS6 emulation starts being a thing within the first 1-2 years of its life so I do wonder how they'll respond to that.

Another fantastic aspect is emulation of older consoles will get better than ever. This should lead to basically every console having its entire library become playable through emulation and eventually all the games getting native ports through decompilation so this tech will be the best thing to have ever happened for video game preservation.
