Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

FUUUUUU Sony!!!!

Sony Interactive Entertainment will end physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting January 2028, the company announced. Following this date, new games will be available via PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” explained Sony Interactive Entertainment content communications senior director Sid Shuman. :This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

Shuman continued, “We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.”

Xbox will follow immediately. Third Parties on Switch 2 are mostly GKC.

Nintendo first party is basically going to be the only true physical games now, and they'll likely disappear several years from now. Unless the NAND price crisis even makes Nintendo bring that forward.

Rip

Ita game over for me btw, this is the end of the line for me, it was a fantastic run from snes till ps4/5.
Time to get those older games physical

If PS6 is also some kind handheld hybrid it kind of makes sense.

I almost joined the site 20 years ago and in retrospective so much changed, espcially the 'Blu Ray' adoption threads seem all so dumb now.

Anyway in the end if people really loved physical they should have bought more but even third party companies aren't complaining.

I'm SHOCKED Sony announced this before Microsoft did. Microsoft will likely follow suit rather quickly. Especially when a much higher percent of Xbox Series consoles are digital compared to PS5. I believe in the US it is over 50% digital only (no disc drive) for Xbox Series consoles and around 25% for PS5.

This is a historical moment. Damn you, Sony!

Yeah, not buying a Sony console moving forward.

Looks like PS5 will be my last Sony console. No point in getting a PS6 with no disc drive to bring my collection forward. Sony digital store is more expensive than Steam, and the whole generation thing and having different version of the games is an annoyance

I will lose a few games per generation like Horizon, but I can live with that

I wonder if Sony will release a separate disc drive for PS6 for those with a large disc collection of games, movies, and TV shows.

That it would only have an optional disk drive was always the rumour. I'm also wondering if that is still the case and will just be for BC and Media purposes or if that's cancelled.
