Forums - Sales - Is nintendo the winner of the 8th gen or the 9th gen?

Is the switch an 8th gen console

Yes its 8th gen 12 37.50%

Yes its 9th gen 20 62.50%

Total:32

I have been pondering this, personally i feel like the switch is an 8th gen console, i am basing that off of a combonation of when it came out and the power of the hardware. Usually in my mind, the generation is determined by the date of release but since switch released half way through 8th and has lasted halfway through 9th, i feel like there needs to be a tiebreaker, and well, thats where power comes in. Im sure this conversation has happened many times on these boards, but i must admit, im not sure what the general consensus is around here, so forgive me on that point.

Anyway, i feel pretty confident in saying its an 8th gen console, and i therefore must say its pretty impressive that they ended up winning that generation after how much the wii u was getting trounced by the ps4. Great comeback for nintendo. This puts nintendo at 4 total championships and in position to 3peat if the switch 2 can manage to outsell the ps5. Itll be interesting to see how gen 9 plays out.

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

Honestly, I think it no longer makes sense to group Nintendo's consoles into the same categories as PS/Xbox as they release on different timelines now.

Ultimately, categories like Gen 8 or 9 are completely arbitrary.

I highly disagree with this. There are clearly still generations that consoles fit into. What nintendo is doing at least at the moment is releasing their console of that generation halfway through. Thats all thats happening. Its much more sensible to say that than to say they aren't in any generation.

Console generations are an arbitrary construct, there really isn't any objective criteria that defines them.

I mean, you can group them based on simple common sense. Lol.

"Common sense" isn't objective either though, it means different things to different people.

You could argue that it's "common sense that Switch is Gen 9 cos it's the successor to the Gen 8 Wii U/3DS" and you could argue that it's "common sense it's Gen 8 cos blah blah etc etc."

It's 9th gen. Check the front page "Consoles Hardware Sales" and the 8th generation option has no Switch.

Switch 2 is a 10th generation console.

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

Neither.
Nintend explicitly announced it´s blue ocean strategy, and Switch´s unique hybrid format mean it isn´t competitor to win vs PS or Xbox home consoles.
If Nintendo was winning anything, you would think they would be bragging about it, even if the framing was subjective like generations.
Yet they don´t really frame their success relative to broader market at all.
Fanboys who have emotional need for personalized competition doesn´t trump real business dynamics.

The schedules are completely out of wack. No reason to even group it as 8th/9th.

Also, in case I sound dismissive, good idea for a thread topic btw, should hopefully prompt some discussion.
