I think for games IP = Franchise

Like, Franchise/IP = Mario
Series = Super Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc

However sometimes is difficult set series and franchise apart. Is Smash Bros a franchise or only a games serie? I'm looking

A crossover between two old IPs is not a new IP, so Mario + Rabbids, Cadence of Hyrule, and Fire Emblem Warriors are not.

Honestly, Nintendo has yet to create a truly great new IP since Splatoon. Ring Fit Adventure and LABO come the closest but are still not exactly modern classics and are overall merely decent.

What is your criteria for "truly great" new IP?

IP like Splatoon, Xenoblade, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, that have very high quality games to their name.

Well, I get that it means high quality, but I'm wondering how that's measured.  I personally would include Arms or Ring Fit.  Is this just a personal preference thing, or is there some objective basis to decide?

Honestly I don't think quality can be entirely objectively measured when it comes to something as subjective as entertainment. In the case of those two I personally would say ARMS lacks content and Ring Fit while fine for what it is quite basic in terms of gameplay design.

Well, if it's a subjective matter, then I guess there's no sense in debating it.

You caught on quickly.

As a sidenote, curl endorses Bayonetta, but dismisses Astral Chain. You'd think that noteworthy similarities welcome similar judgment, but it's pushing subjectivity to a whole new level.

Eh... I like Bayonetta way more than Astral Chain (so far, still need to finish it).

I think u are missing something. Or really I dont think ur making the edfort to understand the critique. Of the games listed, I would only use arms to defend against the critique.

I would say Arms and Astral Chain, but I get where you're coming from. There really aren't a lot of games of an impressive scope that aren't related to an existing IP. I would say Nintendo took a decent leap with Arms this gen, and Splatoon on the Wii U. Still, they don't really stretch themselves much creatively. Makes sense from a business standpoint - but from an artistic one they sometimes underwhelm.

To be honest, I completely forgot about Astral Chain.

Isn't that a co-owned IP like Fatal Frame or Wonderful 101 though?

I can definitely agree with that sentiment. To add a different perspective however, you could also go the extra step and discount astral chain. Not because of its scope, but because its a second party title. Depending on the deal it could be multiplat like w101 someday.

I kinda get it tho. Ur gonna have ur zelda team making zelda games. Its a proven series. Same w mario, pokemon and the like. Its why I was hoping 10do would buy or develop more studios in the recent past.  Its cool to see monolithsoft (did I say that right? Feels off) grow how it has.
