Sony's momentum appears to be on the rise in Japan as the top five selling games of the last week were all on PlayStation platforms and the PSP led the pack.

Posted by James Brightman on Friday, April 11, 2008

According to the latest Japanese video game data from Media Create for the week ended April 6, the PlayStation 3 sold another 11,303 units, which finally brings the installed base across the Pacific to more than two million. In terms of weekly sales, Sony's PSP has really taken off, selling close to 121,000 units – more than double Nintendo's DS Lite for the period.

Sales for the PSP were primarily driven by Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold over 488K copies during the week and recently passed 1.5 million units shipped in the region. The Monster Hunter franchise has 6.8 million units so far.

Here's how the data for the week shakes out:

Hardware

PSP - 120,964
DS - 55,190
Wii - 44,618
PlayStation 3 - 11,303
PlayStation 2 - 10,423
Xbox 360 – 1,452

Software

1. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G - PSP - Capcom - 488, 208

Wow , I didnt even notice the fact that the top 5 games where Sony games :D

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

4 of them are recent releases, but congratulation to Sony for sold 2 million of PS3, a number lower than GC did.

Well with these figures it will take the PSP close to 3 years to get to the DS user base in Japan so i dont think Nintendo will lose any sleep, but the PS3 has to pick up soon it is a pretty impressive machine even if the great games are few and far between

Next week, MKWii 500k+ ;o

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Well, I would hardly call it Sony's momentum, cause it really only is the PSP which is having great sales at the moment. The PS3 however is only falling every single week and is closing in on the under 10k per week territory.

The software part is a prime example of cherry picking. The next 20 titles on the list are on other platforms and conveniently left out of the picture.

Overall it was a pretty good week for Sony in Japan, but the article paints a way too positive picture for Sony in Japan.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is doing so awesome! And the PSP almost equals all other consoles combined. Only 1-2k short of being greater than all consoles combined.

Sjeez.

Sony Domination of the Top 5. That's awesome.

Lol fanboys when will you learn? you call it sony domination, but it lasts only 1 week, then 1 whole year of nintendomination ;)

Someone is a little angry.  DMeisterJ specifically said for this week.

One characteristic of a fanboy is having to defend your preferred console anytime there is good news for your non-preferred console.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
