Forums - Sony Discussion - FF 14: White Mage or Scholar?

Tagged games:

I have recently gotten into FF 14 on PS4, and I have started a conjurer to heal with.  Can anyone share with me what their preferred healer is between white mage and scholar, and why?  Can you go into detail about your solo experience, dungeons and raids also?

I can't really compare, I only play Scholar when I play healer.

It's fun to play and a bit difficult, with a lot of skills if you want to control your pet manually (it's better that way). I don't have any issue in dungeons or solo (except when my ilvl is too low, of course). Even if you're not careful enough, your pet can save an ally, which can be really useful.

In solo or in low level dungeons, you can also let your pet do the healing part of your job, and focus on dealing damage. The scholar mostly deal damage with DoT skills.

For the healing skills... Scholar's healing skills are less powerful than white mage's ones, but if you heal 1000 HP, the next 1000 HP damages will be absorbed too. In that case, I think the white mage would heal 2000 HP, and that's it. So the scholar can prevent damage, but the white mage can heal faster. One or the other will be better depending on the fight.

I think the scholar is better for long fights, because of one skill (Aetherflow) restoring your MP. But I'll let a white mage confirm or deny that !

WHM by far for single target heals, the best is a combo of both end game raids.

I prefer scholar by far. In easier fights I can go full dps and let pet do most healing. As sch I tend to stand closer to the tank for the pet to reach.
As whm I don't like running out of magic and sort of are depending on bards for mana regen.
In raids it's best to have both as they have slightly different roles. Sch is buff and heal for tank, whm is heal

For solo play I switch scholar to Summoner (dps class)

All in all both sch and whm are great.

No way, SCH has better single target heal. Since Benediction and Lustrate aren't affected by potency. Lustrate has an instant recast time, and Aetherflow recasts in 1 minute from when its cast so at max you can cast 6 lustrates with 1 minute of recast or 150% HP with a recast of 1 minute vs 100% hp with a recast of 5 minutes.

As for single target potency heals: Cure II (650) > Physick(400) but a smart Scholar will Macro Physick with Embrace (300)

to get Cure II (650) < Physick (400) + Embrace (300)

The only downside is that Embrace has an 3.0 sec recast time, but alternating Adloquim and Physick with both macrod for Embrace solves that issue.

As for OP:

The best way to describe it is that Conjurer is purely healing focus, while SCH can do healing, support, and DPS. With Aetherflow stacks, Aetherflow itself gives u three, and then holding the skill gives you a total of 6 at one time, you can use bane for DPS, sacred soil for support, and lustrate for emergency heals. Sacred Soil also gives you free succor which is like a stronger full party adloquim. Physick + Embrace is your bread and butter heal though. SCHs are better at MP Managment, while CNJ are better healers.

I've actually spammed Succor for entire dungeons.

OH and another thing, WHM is much less dependent on macros, especially on PS4, I used Macros as early as lvl 32 on my SCH on PS4. But once you set them up its real easy. I'd recommend this guide

All I know is, when doing Frontlines pvp, the SCH is marked 1 as the top healer to focus on for the kill, then the WHM. So that's what my ilvl 102 DRG does. lol

Thank you for all of the info. Based on the fact that I'm a newbie at the moment, which class would be easier for me to play or get a grasp of quickly?

You should try the arcanist and his pet. The conjurer/white mage is maybe easier to get a grasp of, but I think the scholar will be easier to play in dungeon if you're confortable with a pet (because of the pet doing a part of the healing job).

Well, I have completed my first week of the game. I am loving it and the PS4. I asked my free company leader about what class to go. She said scholar if I wanted to heal instead of be an archer. I was intimated by thinking of controlling the pet and leaned heavily towards white mage, but then I was informed I'd never go OOM as a scholar. I decided I'd go for it.

I hit 15 conjurer, then so far managed to level Arcanist to 17 or so. I absolutely love the pet! I have not made macros for it, but instead put it on my hotbars for the keyboard, which is working well.  Of course, as a DPS from WoW I knew what to expect with long Duty Finder queue and was plenty enterained chasing FATEs and quests. My first run was smooth, and my Topaz Carbuncle makes a fine off tank for now.  It is also veyr awesome and fun to help the main healer when the tank is hurting badly.  Main healer didn't seem to notice my pet health, so I had to heal it on my own, but the tank was thankful for it peeling aggro and off tanking some stuff.  :)

I should be Scholar by this weekend I'd think. I'm looking forward to seeing how hard it is to manage Eso as backup heals. I love the fact also that I pretty much never go OOM, just like I was told. As I continue, I wonder why Microsoft said know to this game? It is the reason I bought PS4 and loving it.

Microsoft said no to the shared servers, they don't want Xbox gamers to play with PS gamers.

In dungeons, try to use your Emerald Carbuncle ! You're a DPS, so you should deal damage first. Your Topaz Carbuncle takes aggro, and it makes things more difficult for the real tank (I don't think you need an off-tank in the first dungeons). Use it only if your real tank is bad or dead (or in solo of course).
