Should Nintendo have a Trophy/ Achievement system?

So, I recently read an article on N4G that talked about how Nintendo should adopt it's own Trophy/ Achievement system, and it made me realise something. The lack of such a system is the reason why I have yet to purchase a single game for the system and can't enjoy it. I started getting into the whole trophy game when Sony patched it in back in 2008. I'm not sure why, but it's become a crucial part of the gaming experience for me. It adds a whole new side to the gaming experience by creating a fun way for people across a gaming network to compete while at the same showing how well and how much they play the games they enjoy. Virtually every popular gaming network has it nowadays, and it's that Nintendo has still yet to adopt it themselves. For some reason (for me anyways) earning a notional trophy just makes it feel like you got something out of your game, even if you don't technically get anything out of it. I hope Nintendo pulls a Sony and puts some sort of system in place. It would definitely convince me to take my system out of it's box if I could earn a platinum trophy in Mario/ SSB. Mabye it's just me, but hey, even if you guys disagree that it's not necessary to gaming, I'm you can agree that it's a good thing to have nonetheless. Right? What do you guys think?

If you need a trophy/achievement to motivate you to play a game, you're playing for the wrong reasons.....

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

I think the prospect of you needing a ""physical"" reward for completing something like "Jumped over a hedge!" is quite sad. But, if that's what gets your motor running, then what can I say? I guess you'll just have to miss out on some things.

The fun you'll have while playing a game should be the motivator. Needing acknowledgement for your activities during a game just seems like you're doing it for the bragging rights rather than actual enjoyment.

I don't want trophies/achievements, they're a distracting, worthless gimmick.

If you said... its cause the games didn't appeal to me, I could understand that but this reason is just pure stupid... The only reason anyone ever implemented trophies is to increase the replay value without putting any work to add in extra content for free... I never heard of it being a reason for people to play games... Like come on...

Well that wasn't very nice.

OP: I felt the same way when I transitioned from 360 to Ps3 around 2007. The lack of achievements/trophies was unbearable. I felt like I didn't make any progress completing games, particually single player games. When the 2008 patch came out, I become a "trophy addict" and played a number of bad games just to get the trophies.

I eventually grew out of it, however. I realized that, in the end, nobody cares what trophies I had. Besides my own OCD needs to collect these virutal items, I was still playing shitty games. Once you have trophies for a while, you stop caring about them. At least for me. Now I play for the experience. I'm big on that. I take my time on games, and try to make them as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

If I had a Wii U i'm sure i'd be able to at least enjoy Mario 3d world without trophies :)

I wouldn't say I need it; I just like having the system around because I feel like it adds a new dimension to online gameplay. Plus, they can just be so fun to collect and it can be satisfying to watch a good collection build. I guess it's more of a motivation thing, and the idea of getting a platinum for a Nintendo first party title just sounds awesome. :)

@ Other Posts Hmmm... I can see there's a huge difference of opinion here lol. I guess I'm just so used to the system after using it for 5+ years that playing a console without it is just so wierd.

Play the system that suits your needs. Nintendo probably won't change their policy on achievement/trophy equivalents unless everyone demands them, so I'd stick to PS/Xbox if they're that important to you.
