Forums - Gaming - Early Gen vs Late Gen and Optimizations(Why launch games will not look the best)

So instead of bitching about Resolution for the last 24 hours we now are bitching over frame rate issues on the PS4 with Call of Duty.  Infinity Ward already said they may have not optimized them the best already.

A lot of people are taking this as confirmation that Xbox One is the weaker console and PS4 is more powerful. Is it that simple?

It’s a much more complex answer – there’s so much to it, it’s a balancing act when you get into optimisation – we need more time with it all, basically. It could be years from now until we get to the point where we feel like we’ve maxed out what we can do on both platforms.

And now that we are seeing problems on both consoles I do believe we can say that they do indeed need more time with hardware as many peopl already has said.  This is not to say that XBO and PS4 on equal grounds either.  Don't read more into what I say.

What I am trying to say is don't expect the best looking games at launch on either console.  Next year games will look better.  The year after that even better, and the year after you will see more progress, etc

Look at some of the early gen to late gen games for example.

Oblivion vs Skyrim

Last gen, hardware was unique and required a different approach to programming to fully utilize, such as the PS3 CELL processor, and the 360's IBM processor, along with limited RAM that required extensive optimization to make games run at all.
This gen, 2 of the consoles will be X86 based, so developers already have extensive knowledge of how to program for it. The differences over time won't be as dramatic, aside from the Wii U; Its IBM cpu and edram makes it different to program for, meaning games will look better over time and improve. The other consoles will remain relatively the same.

I <3 Classic Platformers!

Multi-console Owner FTW

Yup. Even end of gen games on wii u will blow our minds.

And that's just flat out wrong. This gen should have the largest difference between launch and end of gen.

They may have less to learn so it may not take 7 years but they arent expected to have things perfect on year one either.

It will undoubtedly get better as the gen goes along. It happens every gen.

But I don't think it will be as much as before... mainly because they're not near the pain in the ass to program for as PS3 was. Techniques, will be developed that improve it though. Like FXAA, or SMAA being used last gen towards the end instead of MSAA for antialiasing which lessened performance hit or No antialising which just looks bad.

None of the consoles have Blast Processing.. they are so weak...

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Hardware isn't as custom as PS360, so it will max out quite quickly. Not at launch though....

Nor mode 7, I'm disappointed

Umm why post this, we all know it is obvious, both systems will improve.................

Simply hogwash....it is still custom OS drives, dev kits and it is still custom hardware, even though it is x86 parts... The tools, engines will evolve as will techniques. Ps games get better over time as well with hthe same hardware................and thats standard not custom hardware.,
