I played both. I can post!

It's close, but I'm gonna have to give it to the GameGear. I mean, the thing displays 32 immense colors. That's a lot of colors. Not to mention the 16 kilobytes of video RAM?!?!? I don't see how anyone could pick the Vita, but that's just my opinion.
Anyway, I always thought the NEC Turbo-Xpress (or whatever the spelling was) was the strongest portable of the day. It actually played the exact same carts as the Turbografx-16 console. Not ports--the actual game cartridges.
As for the Game Gear, it had a lot of problems. It was the only color portable I'd played at the time (missed the Lynx and the previously mentioned NEC portable) but something was missing. The graphics weren't very impressive and the battery life was non-existent. It was like a portable Master System if I had to speculate.
So, we have the Game Gear that came out after the Genesis had already raised the bar and we have the Vita which has certain games that look just as good as the best of the current gen (ie: Street Fighter x Tekken). Vita takes it.
Vita, 100%
GameGear was absolutely massive, ate too many batteries, and burned out faster than a Wii U tablet. The game variety was also poor.

All I know is that Power Rangers The Movie on Game Gear kicked all kinds of butt.
Gamegear was pretty cool then. I had a friend with one. I got to play Donkey Kong and Sonic on it and it really did blow the Gameboy away just by having color. It wasn't the first color handheld though and it was still 8 bit just like the Gameboy. It's crippling feature was its battery life. 6AA batteries every 4 hours. Gameboy only took 4 and lasted over 10. It's different now with rechargeable batteries built into to handhelds but we had to pay for those batteries back then. The Vita has a longer battery life and so does the 3DS with 3D turned off.
Vita is hands down way better to have.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

I had both! Didn't get the game gear till just before the PSP released. It was horrible but retro ;)
Still got my Game Gear. Give it play every now and then. It's a massive handheld, but I love it.
I played both consoles but never owned them. Vita is an amazing piece of machinery, while the GameGear was sloppy in it's design in that it was huge, ate batteries, and even if it had a color backlit screen, it was the worst color backlit screen ever made.

The gamegear wins why? It had something no gameboy had before backlight! I remember when I was in a plane on my way to Mallorca in front of my seat was a boy playing with his Gamegear and I was OMFG! What is this thing? It has so many colors? it even has a backlight and he can watch TV on it WTF????
After the vacation I went to a flea market and bought myself a Gamegear xD. And 4 games (i still have only those 4 games xD Sonic Outrun Streets of Rage and a 4in1 game with soccer and some kind of tetris style game and another racing game on it etc.)
I have a Vita here for 2 weeks now and I am playing Gravity Rush on it also have Wipeout and PS1 classics on it and so far the thing is okayish the analogs are the worst I have ever seen on any device and the splotches, vertical lines etc. (typical cheap OLED screen flaws I guess people call it OLED MURA) are annoying especially in dark grey/brown games like Gravity Rush.
So for me the Gamegear wins even tho it was a battery sucking monster. (I remember I had to buy special Camera approved batteries or so for the thing to work more than an hour or so lol cheap dicount batteries from ALDI or whatever just didnt last long enough. I universal power supply when at home lol)
It wins because it at least had 1 WOWED me at least once the Vita on the other hand never made me wow (well it did when the price was released at the Sony conference I thought hmm not bad for a powerful device like that)
P.S. To be fair. My perception of those 2 devices might be flawed since I saw the Game Gear as a kid and the Vita is a device I use as an adult so ....
