Woman dies after cop's gun discharges during hug
By QMI Agency

Adaisha Miller, 24, was killed on Sunday, July 8, 2012, after she hugged an off-duty police officer at a birthday party and his gun accidentally went off. (Handout/QMI AGENCY)

A Detroit woman is dead after she hugged an off-duty police officer at her birthday party Sunday morning and his gun accidentally discharged.

Adaisha Miller was to turn 25 on Monday.

Police said Miller hugged the unnamed officer from behind while he was dancing. The gun discharged, striking her in the chest.

Television station WDIV reported the bullet went through her lung and heart, and she died in hospital.

But Yolanda McNair, Miller's mother, told the Detroit Free Press the two were facing each other and hugging when the gun went off.

Police are investigating, and called the shooting "a tragic incident."

The police-issued 40-calibre Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol was holstered at the time.

McNair told the Free Press the family is waiting for answers.

"Instead of giving her a party this week, I'm planning her obituary and funeral," McNair said.

Whether police "want to call it freak accident or mistake in judgment, it should have never happened to my child and there's nothing I can do to get her back," she told WDIV.

So safety + trigger + holster position all failed (seriously can't think of a holster that would have the gun pointing in the direction of the woman's chest if they were facing)

guns don't kill people eh?

still, it seems very unlikely a holstered gun could hit her in the chest

Final Destination. Maybe this woman had a premonition then avoided death. Now death caught up to her.

Jks

This is actually very unfortunate. Must have been devastating for the officer.

Yay!!!

Are we sure d21lewis isn't a cop anymore...?

Well that throws my theory off.

I was guessing the woman who died hugged somewhat to the side of a tall cop with a high shoulder holster (which would mean the gun could aim at someone's chest)

Edit: just watched the vid and is is mentioned multiple times the officer was male... but also that the woman was "dancing to his rear, with her hands on his waist" and also that it was a waist holster. I am guessing that perhaps she had bent at the knees doing some kind of body grind, and because the weapon was in a holster that allows the trigger to be pressed, and also that the weapon safety is incorporated into the trigger she may have accidentally caught the trigger herself.

The cop obviously was pissed off and shot her and then lied to make it look like an accident. There is NO WAY IN HELL that a police gun which was holstered etc. could randomly go off and hit someone in the CHEST...

Seems about right.

I've seen it in movies before. The person with the gun decides to hug, instead of kill, the other person. But somehow the gun goes off anyway... oh wait, they meant to do that.

Read my above edited section... assuming the police officer in the video is telling the truth (i'm not going to get into some consipracy theory) I think it is possible she set it off herself.

She was behind him dancing, and had hands on his waist which is where the gun was holstered. He was off duty so it was not in an official police holster (which presumably have some kind of trigger guard). The gun's safety is incorporated into the trigger which seems like a dumb design for a police issue weapon to me (the police are not meant to be a shoot first ask questions later force, the gun should be a deterrent before it's a weapon. Then again what do I know, the British police don't carry guns, and the special forces that do probably wouldn't be allowed to carry them off duty) which means if it is pressed while in the holster it will go off. The only way I can see the bullet hitting her chest is if she was at kneeling height, and as they were dancing I reckon she may have bent down low doing a move and at some point pulled the trigger.
