EA and DICE Servers Disappearing From Battlefield 3

If you’re a faithful player of Battlefield 3, you may have noticed something happening this week: Official EA and DICE multiplayer servers seem to be vanishing.

Do a check for online multiplayer games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Battlefield 3, and you’ll see that official servers have all but disappeared. Instead, multiplayer is now relying on private servers—which players can rent from EA for $30 a month.

It isn’t hard to come to a possible conclusion: EA has seen a lot of money coming in from the private server rental, so they see the ability to save money by no longer running official servers.

In fact, a few days ago on Reddit, there was an “Ask Me Anything” session with DICE community manager Daniel Matros, and he made some very interesting comments that relate to all of this:

Why are there no official DICE servers anymore? Now all that is around are the rented servers.
There is only so much physical space and digital space where you can have servers. The community requested an RSP programme and we delivered.

Is the removal of the Dice/EA servers permanent? The Rent-a-Servers all suck and have ridiculous settings.
Everything in the wonderful world of Battlefield is dynamic

On Twitter today, member Ryan Flower asked the official Battlefield account where the DICE PS3 servers went, and he got this response:

“We’re currently looking into this, thanks for your patience! ^AS”

So, the question is this: Is this an internal error that has taken down the servers, or has EA indeed made the decision to pull them in favor of player-supported servers? If that’s the case, is it really a good idea to have no official servers to compliment the player servers?

My opinion? *MOTHERFUCKINGTABLEFLIP* I liked the standard setup dice servers provided (100 tickets for Rush, and 150-250 for conquest). These new servers with like 500 tickets are just massive clusterfucks and defenders have a tough time having to deal with the attackers for so long, if you have a troll defensive team, it's just constant splattering against the wall of trolls.

Very disappoint to say the least, and those shortcut packs are even more of a fucking troll..

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I'm getting so pissed off with 500 ticket Rush games, it is OK for conquest and TDM, but it completely unbalances Rush games, the defenders don't have a chance.

It's a great game and I'm playing it to death at the moment, but there are still so many issues with it and it seems to be getting worse. It's bad enough that they have 3 maps packs in the works prices at £11.99 each.

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

Wow... that sucks for you console owners. I feel sad. A year ago, DICE was ranting about Activision, saying DICE would never charge for map packs, that they truly value their community, etc..

But EA is just turning them into money whores... =/

Let's be fair, though, that shortcut kit has been around in previous games, and unlike other shooter games, guns you unlock later on are not necessarily better, they just handle differently. IN FACT, the best assault and support guns are the very first unlocks in their class, and the best engineer gun is one of the first ones as well. Of course, this is up for debate and these are just my any many others' preferences, but the truth remains that later unlocks are not "better" by default. That is something I truly appreciate about the game.

It's why I never got Battlefield 3 to begin with. Was I the only one who played the buggy beta with laggy servers?
Even post-release EA servers are horrible.

The game does seem to get worse with each update.
