Naughty Dog has no desire to abandon its hugely successful Uncharted franchise when the PlayStation 4 rolls around, the studio has told VideoGamer.com.

The Sony-owned Santa Monica team has previously worked on a new franchise with each console generation - Crash Bandicoot on PSone, Jak and Daxter on PS2 and Uncharted on PS3 - but the studio insists the move to PlayStation 4 won't necessarily mean the end of Nathan Drake.

"It just happened to work out that way," said game director Justin Richmond. "We've only ever done one franchise per generation just because we're a one-team studio, and that's something we've always stuck with."

Community strategist Arne Meyer added: "The games changed because the technology changed. We were trying to create games around the technology. Jak was doing a lot of interesting things in terms of design; we had a game design and a game world that fit with what the new technology had. With the PS3, technology had advanced to the point where we could do stylised realism. There's a tonne of reasons, but that was one of the reasons why things started to progress that way. We were looking for something different, because Jak wasn't really fitting into that. It felt more interesting to do that."

"When we switched over from Jak to Uncharted, people wanted something new," added Richmond. "People get bored of working on the same stuff over and over. You don't want to just slavishly remake games to what the demand is. You want to be interested in what you're working on, and the second that we get bored that's when the games will be something that no-one wants to play, right? We've never said that Uncharted is two games, or three games or whatever. There's not a masterplan sitting in the studio, [adopts evil genius voice] "WE WILL MAKE FIVE OF THESE!" Our fans are huge on this game, and they're already asking, 'When is Uncharted 4 coming out?!' 'You haven't even played 3 yet, calm down!'

"As long as people are willing to buy these games, and as long as we feel like we have an interesting story to tell, I'm absolutely happy to keep making them. But at some point, there's going to come a point where people in the studio are interested in doing something new, and we'll move on."

Richmond concluded: "In terms of hardware generations and all that junk, we're just making games. At this point hardware is so powerful to begin with, it's almost a secondary concern. The leap into the next generation is going to be amazing, right? But I don't think it's going to be something that demands us to make a totally new franchise. If we want to, the option's there."

I doubt it. They always make one franchise per generation. Althou, if they countiniue to follow the tradition, we should see the 4th Uncharted game as a racing game.

I would be sad if not.

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

did you read the post?

thats what we all think but there saying its only because of the new systems power they decide what to do.

Expected, I doubt sony wants to give up its second best selling IP.

they reason they "gave up" on Crash is because its owned by Activision , they didn't abandon Jak yet.

we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak!
we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak! we want Jak!

hope i got my point across. UC4 would be a great launch title for PS4, but i'm not sure i'm interested.

ND need to expand. I thought they had, but apparently they still only have 95 ish working on Uncharted 3 SP, but they need to get to the size where they can make 2 games concurrently, and of the same quality that they do now

But I don't really mind if they make more Uncharted. I love the games, but I do feel that for most games 3 is enough, I think ND should take on another challenge, or make Jak 4...

New game. I love uncharted but something new is better. They can always come back to it. I think another one would just be to much.

       Coffee is for closers!

Agree with Munkeh111 Naughty Dog needs to expand. I think the thing thats stopping them is that they attribute the small team developer feel to their success and are maybe scared to move away from the proven formula. But i think theres enough leadership in Naughty Dog to make two or three teams (two for sure!).

Ideally Uncharted 4 should launch as a ps4 launch title. This way Naughty dog can make another amazing leap and really wow us like they did with U2 and possibly grow the franchise even more. It will also be for the good of the ps4 to have a renowned title like uncharted be available at launch and should do wonders for the success of ps4. I know i would immediately be sold on ps4 if i knew uncharted would be on it, im sure many fans feel the same.

Now if they had atleast another team, then they could create a completely new franchise for the following year. Depending on the confidence they have in the new franchise, they could even go with that as a luanch title instead of uncharted and do uncharted for the following year. Id go with uncharted as the luanch title though as ps3 kinda proved that not having an established franchise at luanch isnt the best way to go about it.

If they had a third team they could revisit a franchise a older franchise like jak.

I feel naughty dog were one of the few sony first party developers this gen that actually nailed it when it came to creating a new successful IP. I think killzone, resistance, motorstorm and a few others will definately fall away next gen IMO. they should really. With the resources and backing that sony give their developers, they should be doing much better. People blame the advertising and marketing of Sony...which definately played a part but ive come across way too many people who simply did not like those games but liked other games in the same genres.
