What's the outline you start with here, shapes? Just a rough sketch?

I put a grid over my subject.  Then I draw a light grid on paper.  I usually start with the eyes and work my way out.  The eyes are usually what I'm going to mess up, so I start there first.  Without using a grid, my drawings would be horrible.  

I've been told my drawings are shit, too mathematical.  I still enjoy doing it, it relaxes me.  

For the hair I use really thin erasers. I cut them into the thinness I need.

Oh this comment was gold, I've never used a grid before but found this app and it overlays a radial grid. Absolute game changer. Thank you.
