Go for the Insect glaive, it has a medium level learning curve and if you go for fast insects it's a speedy weapon. Mix between gun and easily the most mobile weapon, changes the game so much from any other weapon it feels like a different game but you can get the main idea of the weapon from a 15 minute YouTube video. Funny that you say that, because I am actually using the Insect Glaive. The game recommended it after I answered some questions. So here I am, jumping around like a mad man and waiting for those colors in Slot 1, 2 and 3 to get filled up for my super move. At least I figured that out. Sometimes I land on top of a monster, which looks cool as hell. But I don't know when and how that happens, lol. It just happens by accident, like a lot of things when I fight monsters. =D

I am also quite overwhelmed by the options for gear and stuff. Plus meals and whatnot. I end up doing something, but I have no idea if I actually have a benefit from it.

No, no. Those three colours are guaranteed by shooting the monsters different parts with your Insect. Hit the claws or head for red which boosts attack. Hit the wings or feet for white which is agility and hit the armour for yellow which is armour. All three together will open up your moveset and allow you to combo. There are really simple combos you can pull off but string them together and do well and you should be up in the air wailing on the monster for a few seconds or in flying monsters cases longer and then you can combo to crash down in varying ways depending on the situation for massive damage.
