Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Staring into the abyss of a world where Nintendo has no games scheduled for release. Edit: The Time of Darkness Has Arrived

I think it's more a matter of Nintendo no longer wanting to announce games that they're not 100% sure will release in the next 6-12 months. They've had several big game announcements in the past that ended up being extremely premature in terms of how far out they were (i.e. Animal Crossing, Bayo 3, BOTW 2, Prime 4, etc), so I think they're trying to avoid that going forward. I'm guessing they were probably getting ready to announce a lot of this year's slate over the past month, but then corona hit Japan hard and now the whole world, so that could very well have thrown their plans off. I highly doubt they don't have much of anything for this year to show, surely they couldn't be that stupid with how successful the Switch has been and no longer having two platforms to develop for.

Here's an example based on games about to be released.  Animal Crossing: New Horizons was first announced all the way back during E3, 2019.  It's been a long wait hasn't it?  When was Final Fantasy 7 Remake first announced?  All the way back during E3, 2015.  But Sony can keep teasing this game over and over again, so it seems like they have a lot of games coming, even if they are spread out over the course of 3-5 years.  The PS4 was less than 2 years old when FF7R was first announced.  The PS4 was younger when FF7R was first announced than the Switch was when Animal Crossing: New Horizons was first announced.  We actually have to wait a really, really long time to get the big games on the PS4, because Sony and AAA third parties announce them so far ahead of time.

Personally I prefer the way Nintendo does it.  I find long waits to be frustrating.  Yeah, we've all waited a long time for this next Direct, but waiting for a Direct is not nearly as bad as waiting for a game I really want.  I very much prefer all the announced games to come out a year or less after they are announced.  I feel like most of the game industry is trying to mess with me and make it seem like they have more than they really do.  Nintendo doesn't have to announce games 5 years ahead of time, because they have plenty of games coming out this year.

For people who doesn't have much free money is good to know in advance the games that's gonna be released, so we can pick the ones we want and save enough money for them

I understand americans don't have that concern (because games are generally priced on dollar), but right now a Nintendo triple A game is around 30% of the minium wage in my country, that's a lot

This is a good point that I didn't consider.  In the US, we also have a healthy second hand market, and so a person can easily get a game cheaper than $60 if they are willing to wait.

Also our minimum wage is stated as an hourly wage.  When you say "30%", is that 30% of a week's wage?

Unfortunately, I meant month's minium wage. Even for a middle class worker like myself one game a month is barely affordable

To be fair we are experiencing a heavy decrease in our currency this year (decreased around 25% since January), but stills the fact gaming is very expensive here since forever

Wow, well I can understand why you would want to know ahead of time then.  I would imagine if you wanted Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, for example, then you didn't get much warning to buy it.  On the other hand, the more popular games with a lot of content do end up getting announced many months ahead of time: Zelda, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, etc....  I would think Nintendo has given you enough time for their more popular games.

It's not even a matter of money for me, it's a matter of having something positive and concrete to look forward to in the future.

Between my cancer and there being a global pandemic underway, which I am especially at risk of, being an asthmatic undergoing cancer treatment, the whole world is basically one giant churning ocean of fear, uncertainty, and despair.

I need something positive and concrete to look to in the future, and games are my passion, my special interest, the thing that brings me the most joy. I need a light in the darkness ahead to keep me going. I need hope.

Jeez, that's rough. I remember calculating my daily wage at an average job I took up temporarily some years back, and it was about $60 per day (more than that if you count taxes), so I thought of it as one videogame per day.

If a game costs a whole months salary, how do people do it?

As you can see by the dreadful sales of our market, most Brazilian just don't do it, unless it's a free PC game, those are really popular

Console games are something a bit more restricted for middle and upper middle class families. My office pays in line with most people with bachelor degree, which is around 2 to 4 times the minimum wage, so gaming is a luxury we can afford (if we don't have a children to spend on of course)

Also companies generally adjust some of their products prices like Sony and Xbox games have lower prices here after some months of their release, same for steam games. Spotify subscription is just 4 dollars, and Netflix 6 dollars. Nintendo don't have official physical stores here hence their physical copies are all imported, neither lower the prices of their digital games too much (if they did so, everyone would just change their online store to here)

To understand this better: While we can buy a physical copy of the PS4 version of Dragon Quest XI for 160 RS (about 32 USD), the same game on Switch can be as high as 340 RS (68 USD)

In fact, I see many stores selling Link's Awakening, Smash Bros and Mario Odyssey for 400 RS (78 USD)

Wow...

...yeah. If you get paid $300 a month here, you're in luck.

Do things like groceries cost as much for you guys as they do for us then? As in, 1,5 Liter milk costs about $0,8 - $1,2 here.
A Twix is around $0,7.

I imagine it's just certain items like videogames that cost a lot for you guys.

A good milk is about 6 RS, so yeah 1.2 USD. By the way we buy on 1L boxes here, not 1,5L

Twix is 0,4 to 0,6 though. Depends on where you buy

They’re scheduled internally. We’re getting releases, doesn’t make a difference if they were announced at the beginning of the year or now. They release when they release.

I mean, i'm fairly sure we're going to get a direct next week or sometime this month after that Nindie prediction, but regardless you kind of indirectly pointed out something that I think needs to be brought up. When people say "we were told to expect 2 Nintendo Directs this month", what they really mean is, the leaker community which at best has a 50/50 record on being correct (and that's even too high) told us to maybe possibly get a direct this one, then another one after that. But don't worry, if they're wrong it's just the sources fault, not theirs!

I don't want Nintendo to announce directs long in advance, I like the style they go for as is, but I also don't think ambiguous direct statements from third party sources should be used to reassure people, either. It's ridiculous. I never would have in my life guessed that a general direct for the Switch would land in late March, yet here we are. At some point, accepting rumors because of conventional wisdom just totally fails, and even when rumors make sense they are often wrong.

Bottom line: Rumors are not a counter-argument against concerns about lack of information. In fact, they kind of prove the concern further!

Exactly, people treat the rumor of a general direct next week as though it's confirmed when the rumor-mongers also told us we'd get one in Feb.

We've been told "just be patient, it's coming soon" for months now, with nothing to show for it. You can't expect people to wait and suffer forever without losing patience.

Suffering eh? I really hope the coronavirus gives you some perspective on life ffs. This is not suffering—get a grip.

I have cancer, and I'm in a high risk bracket of dying from corona due to both that and asthma. In times of extreme anxiety and constant mortal danger, the things that bring us relief and help us cope are of paramount importance, and being robbed of them is genuinely distressing.
