Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why do most third party publishers ignore the Wii completely ?

I think It would take more then we think to port them over. Really Wii people should be happy, I play mostly on PS3 then 360, a lot of the ports over to PS3 suck, and its the strongest system of them all. So it sucks but one the other hand be happy these games don't come out and there horrible ports. I would rather they just don't come out at all if developers are not going to do a good enough job on the game. There is just nothing worse then shitty ports.

Monster Hunter 3. The top selling third party game in Japanese home systems this generation.

I've noticed several people forgetting about that game.  It probably has something to do with the fact that it isn't out in all regions yet.

I've noticed both of you forgetting about FF XIII.

But you didn't notice me already getting reminded, and me admitting the goof.

I am willing to bet my house and two shoes... that if DQX remains single platform it takes the crown for highest selling third party game this generation in Japan. Matter of fact I will throw in some doritos and cheese sauce too.

But Dragon Quest is a casual series. Or will be once that happens.

If 2D Mario can be considered a "non-game" by the Industry, I am sure this game will be too.

Looking at sales figures for both DQIX and FFXIII, DQX has the potential to outsell FFXIII's LTD in its first week if it charts similarly to DQIX and FFXIII sells on par with X-2. The whole internet would enrupt into a shitstorm.

Really, FF XIII is on the Wii now?  I didn't know.

I think I bolded the wrong part.

I meant to bold it being the highest third party seller in Japan this gen, which it clearly isn't. Oh well, he already admitted folly anyway.

Goof, not folly (that word means a major mistake, as in you could end your career or something on that level).

I should add it's still a)the second highest selling and was the first until FF XIII came out, and b) high sales for a system that can't sell third party games.

Sorry. English isn't my first language, and while I do speak it rather well, I tend to make mistakes here and there.

I have a question that is analagous to the continuing question of 3rd party Wii support:

Why are 3rd parties still making inferior PS3 versions of their games? Most recently, Bayonetta? For 3 years, they done it over and over. Why won't they put more effort into their PS3 ports? I prematurely bought a PS3 thinking that since it was the most powerful, the games would be the best. But nooooo....instead they make the 360 versions of better quality.....

See what I did there? That's what Wii fans are doing here. I could have sulked and continued to complain about inferior PS3 ports, but instead rectified my gaming problem by getting a 360. Wii fans have all the possibility to do the same thing. You all bought your console based on certain assumptions that didn't come to fruition, so I suggest you fix your problem. As I stated before, if you want games with better effort behind them....you know where to get them, and since this thread has gone on for 200+ posts, you all must recognize that the place to get them is not on the Wii.

So what're you going to do? Sit back and watch as these developers pull support of "core" games for the Wii, and continually ask why? Or will you realize the obvious, go HD, and get the games that they are putting great amounts of effort into? Several times, you ask "why are they only making games for HD?"....You guys realize that they are only making games for HD, and you obviously want those games, so why don't you go HD as well. It's simple logic, really....

Currently playing:

Unreal Tournament 3, Warhawk, Rock Band, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, DMC2, then 3, and Radiata Stories

"Stop the presses// It's been a while but I'm back in session// And in the past time my flow's matured more than adolescence// It's time to learn a lesson// So get you pen and your pad out, listen close, and take heed to this blessing"

Many of us (probably most of us) do own a HD console, but realized that graphics, physics and AI hit a point in the last generation (potentially before that) where the value from effort spent improving them was smaller than the value from effort spent improving the user interface. Between the success of the Wii and the Nintendo DS, and the success of games with controllers designed specifically for them (guitar hero, rock-band), it should be clear that the people are looking for alternatives to the conventional controller and the fact that so many publishers are afraid to put any effort into meeting these desires is pretty sad.

HappySquirrel..you make it so that my posts are irrelevant. I love you and hate you for that ;)

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

at the end of the day. Nintendo will bleed black and the small studios that continue to support the HD systems will bleed red.

Never mind the small studios (their going bankrupt on HD) the big studios are bleeding red on HD.    Only Ubisoft (home of the casualz) and Activision (GH/WoW) are in the black and they are relying heavily on the expanded market to do so.    I think Sega broke even having lost tons on their HD efforts but done well on Wii/DS.  Capcom has a good year too.

At the end of the day 3rd parties will either finally learn the lesson Nintendo is teaching or die in combat for the HD buck.

Gaming is a business. I'm pretty sure the 3rd parties would be all over the wii if they thought it'll make them the most money but their actions have shown that they don't think so. I'm pretty sure we don't have access to the business dealings that fuel the decisions of these companies so it's bestnot to jump into conclusions. If I remember correctly, there was also a thread on this site a few weeks ago or so about sega lamenting their own losses even after releasing "core" wii games.

Perhaps you could explain the lesson ninty is teaching that 3rd parties need to follow? Is it that everyoe should develop their very own marios because you should know that that's not possible. I may be missing your point there. If you could enlighten me I'd appreciate it.

Look at the top All Time Best Selling titles.   It's vertually all Nintendo with GTA:SA and a GT in there.  All in the double digits of millions.   Nintendo doesn't look to make a game that'll sell a million or two.  They look to make games that will sell 10 to 40 million!!   Wii Music sold almost 4M copies.  It's a flop to Nintendo but EA, Activision, Sony, MS or any other publisher would have hailed it as the next big thing in music games and pimped out sequels and spin-offs and a DS version.

The only way to get the numbers that Nintendo strives for is to make games that appeal to everyone.  Men, women, and kids.

Fact is even last generation EA was losing money and 3rd parties were crying that they were losing profitability due to ever increasing development costs.   This generation with HD graphics and even more processing power that's a real reality.   They are all losing money on HD games.   Yes, the CoD's and GTA's make profit.  But statically only 20% of all games earn a profit.    With HD development that means huge losses on games that don't and that's 80%!! That's why everyone is dropping new IPs, closing studios and cancelling games.  They are gambling on only making those games they consider sure to be in that 20% win category. Currently as mentioned only Activision and Ubisoft are doing really well and that's because they are major pushers of casual games as well as core.

The lesson is this:   In order to combat high development costs 3rd parties need to stop focusing on selling 1-5m copies and need to raise the bar and ask themselves, how do we sell 10-20m copies?  The answer is by not focusing on the core alone.    Look at movies.   Even most 'guy' action flicks have some romance elements to make it more appealing to women.   Avatar is a movie that appeals equally to both sexes.  But Avatar video games are still made for young males.   The industry needs to grow up and make games for and market to everyone.  Like Nintendo does.

Actually, that word is a bit archaic in modern Engish (now we usually say "fuck-up", "total screw-up", or "shoot yourself in the foot"), so it's perfectly understandable.
