Forums - Sales Discussion - Am I the only one disappointed in Uncharted 2's 800k?

No way in hell does this game get Game of the Year over MW2...

On topic: I think it is pretty sad that most of the PS3 fanboys seemed happy with 800k for the biggest exclusive PS3 game of the year when the Xbox 360 big exclusives all sell 1.5m-4m. Hell, ODST almost tripled it in first week sales and it got a lot of bad hype for being $60 for being an expansion, while Uncharted 2 got nothing but the biggest good hype we have seen this year...

Does it hurt you that Uncharted 2 is rated higher than ALL 360 exclusives? And that it moved more hardware than Halo: ODST???

Sorry to burst your buble but Uncharted 2 IS going to be a game of the year. It got better reviews than COD 4, Halo 3, LittleBigPlanet, Fallout 3, Gears 2 and all those games have GOTY awards... in fact, Uncharted 2 is the highest rated game this generation after GTA IV, so yeah... Uncharted 2 - GOTY

nothing to be disappointed about

but I WILL say, its legs HAVE to be there to get to the 3 - 4 million predictions people are throwing around

LEGS will be LESS than Uncharted 1's

I am still confident & proud of my 2.5 Million LTD prediction

Worse LTD than the first game? But shouldn't this one automatically get legs from being the PS3's graphical showcase while also riding on the Slim?

Wow at this thread! A lot of people seem to be missing the point.

While reviews have been extremely strong for Uncharted 2 (and it is a truly stunning game), I think most would agree that the sales are more solid than spectacular - i.e the sales for the game compared to the reviews are a little disappointing.

What most need to understand is that this is a pretty common thing - games that sell extremely well are games that have the general appeal and resonate with an audience, not necessarily games that are considered to be extremely good. A number of amazing games have sold disappointingly IMO this gen - Super Mario Galaxy (still the highest rated game of the gen so far), Twilight Princess, Bioshock, LittleBigPlanet - all sold reasonably well but disappointing compared to expectations (based on previous games, similar games, review scores etc).

Also for those comparing to Uncharted - a sequel to a great original will always sell really well in the first week in comparison - don't expect it to have the same kind of legs though. Even if 2 hadn't been as good as 1 it would still have been expected to sell 5 times as much in the first week, if not more.

Thank you ioi, you understand completely what I was trying to say throughout the thread. The sales of UC2 are good, but nothing amazing. Many great games never see the sales they should see and people need to recognize that there is nothing anyone can do about it. The Sony fans are really just trying to make themselves feel better I suppose, but if I was them I would not be happy with the sales. Unless the sales are off the charts I don't think anyone should be happy on any game. The more the good games sell the more those companies can continue to create quality titles. However, if great games don't sell enough then those companies go out of busy or have to scale back their development. I just believe that a game that is touted as the biggest PS3 exclusive of the year should have sold more than just 830k week one. I don't think anyone could have expected 2 million, but I think 1.2-1.3 should not have been out of the question. I think one of the main problems with PS3 and software sales is the fact that there is always going to be at least a small part of the install base that uses the system for media and movies more than for games...

And no one said U2 sales are amazing, some people said there are good and some said they are disapointing.  Naughty Dog ( the people who created the game ) said the sales are better than waht they predicted so please go troll somewhere else

LMAO, you are kidding right? Why would I care if it got higher reviews when it has sold like absolute crap compared to all of those games. I am sure the devs and publishers of those games all cried their way to the bank because UC2 beat them in review scores by a little bit. And sorry, I will say it once again, no way in hell does this game get GoTY from any truly respectable publication over MW2. It is not happening, period. Say whatever you like because the PS3 is losing this generation by a huge margin when it comes to software sales.

"If you don't like me, bite me!"

Bad for you.

Gears of War sold 900k first week, so what? Should we also be dissapointed? As long as Uncharted 2 will have good legs, i`m fine.

The game is awesome, i`m more than sure, it will have Gears of War level sales.

Wow, I went to sleep and woke up with this mess.

Now, I understand being disapoited when you expect so much, but take it this way, we had the same thread about MGS4, LBP, killzone 2, Ucharted D F, Resisance, Motorstorm, how about every first party game.
But, the first week means nothing if it doesn't continue on selling.

But in all fairness, with the exception of MGS IV which definitely exceeded expectations, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2 have all performed below the expectations of fans.

The same will be true of Forza 3 - it has been hyped up to the extreme but will do well to do more than 400-500k week one. I'm sure the game is a good jump from Forza 2 in terms of graphics / stuff to do but it will probably sell roughly in line with every other Forza title so far.

People expected Halo 3 type of sales for MGS4 and remember you predicted 1.7 milllion first week and and ended up at 1.2 million and people went crazy. We had plenty of threads with people being disapoointed with MGS4 first week sales.

I have come to accept that exclusive games on the PS3 just dont have the first week sales as the 360 or the big wii games. I am just hoping for legs, that's all.

@ioi: Consumers seem to be choosing their games far more carefully this generation. Miyamoto mentioned a week ago in reference to the Japanese market that while the big games are performing as expected, it's the smaller games that aren't selling as they would have in past generations.

You could attribute this to the breaking up of the core and the expanded audience (PS2 had a nice mix or both core and expanded audience which meant that more of the core orientated titles of this gen may have also been bought by these casual gamers too) or to the perceived rise in costs related to video games.

OT: I'm kinda glad I missed this thread up until now - no chance of saying something ban-worthy :P

I will say that comparing Uncharted 2 to Halo isn't right considering the fact that Halo is the biggest exclusive that Microsoft has, had the biggest marketing budget of video game ever, had 5+ years of fans behind it and two games. Both of those games selling a huge amount may I add.

The other main distinction is that one is a FPS and one is an action adventure. The best selling action adventure franchise is The Legend of Zelda. The highest rated game of all time OoT sold 7.6 Million in a franchise with a loyal userbase that had grown for around 10 years on the back of quite a few games. I reiterate, the highest selling action adventure game sold 7.6 million and IS the highest rated title of ALL TIME.

So let's compare Uncharted 2 to Zelda shall we?

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sold 815k week one worldwide on Wii. There isn't any other meaningful sales information from a console Zelda but Phantom Hourglass is more in line with factors like install base so we'll compare Uncharted 2 to that.

Uncharted 2 week one: 835k

Phantom Hourglass week one: 707k

Zelda has legs, Uncharted we don't know about yet.. I know these comparisons aren't very fair to Zelda but it's all we really have.. Twilight Princess would probably have sold around 1.2 million worldwide including GameCube week one, you can still see how well Uncharted 2 has done. Mentioning Halo is stupid.

@psrock

REALLy psRock

MGS4 is the only PS3 game that people ACCEPT had better than expected sales (no-one on Vg chartz except crazzyman and one or two more people thought it would do better than MGS3, & now it may have a shot at 5 million)

NO-ONE apart from troll accounts felt it had "disappointing" sales, I dunno what your talking about

@ioi

GRAN TURISMO 5 will cross 3.5 Million though

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

If you are talking Gears of War 1 it sold 600K worldwide to a user base of 5.2 M consoles.  Gears of War 2 sold 1.8 M to a user base of 22 M consoles...  Uncharted 2 sold 800 K to 25 M users.

You can conclude one of two things from this.  Demographics are different between the two consoles OR the sales were poor.  Although I feel the sales should have been higher, I think it is more to do with demographics.

I think there are three types of PS3 owners making up 90% of the user base.  First there are people who bought it purely for blu-ray movies, second, are the core gamers who buy every console released if they can afford it, third is the Sony PS2 followers going to their next generation for the next generation of PS2 franchises...  And then there are the miscellaneous 10% that don't fit in with those categories.

You can see this evidenced in sales.  Traditional PS2 franchises that went multi-platform have sold strong and in some cases better on PS3.  Soul Calibur, GTA IV, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, (I also bet Tekken and FF) etc.  Sony PS2 franchises have performed best...  MGS4, GT5 Prologue, etc.   But, I think the blu-ray only crowd affect the total sales as well.  They aren't necessarily big on games, and they will pick and choose a lot more.  New franchises have not done fabulous on PS3.  Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, LBP, etc. have had decent sales.  I don't think any of them have really driven PS3 sales to a large degree.  GT5 Prologue and MGS4 were real drivers compared to Uncharted.

I'm not saying any of this is good or bad, but I think if you understand the user base a little more it explains the difference between 360 and PS3 sales #'s in any particular game.
