@ioi: Consumers seem to be choosing their games far more carefully this generation. Miyamoto mentioned a week ago in reference to the Japanese market that while the big games are performing as expected, it's the smaller games that aren't selling as they would have in past generations.
You could attribute this to the breaking up of the core and the expanded audience (PS2 had a nice mix or both core and expanded audience which meant that more of the core orientated titles of this gen may have also been bought by these casual gamers too) or to the perceived rise in costs related to video games.
OT: I'm kinda glad I missed this thread up until now - no chance of saying something ban-worthy :P
I will say that comparing Uncharted 2 to Halo isn't right considering the fact that Halo is the biggest exclusive that Microsoft has, had the biggest marketing budget of video game ever, had 5+ years of fans behind it and two games. Both of those games selling a huge amount may I add.
The other main distinction is that one is a FPS and one is an action adventure. The best selling action adventure franchise is The Legend of Zelda. The highest rated game of all time OoT sold 7.6 Million in a franchise with a loyal userbase that had grown for around 10 years on the back of quite a few games. I reiterate, the highest selling action adventure game sold 7.6 million and IS the highest rated title of ALL TIME.
So let's compare Uncharted 2 to Zelda shall we?
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sold 815k week one worldwide on Wii. There isn't any other meaningful sales information from a console Zelda but Phantom Hourglass is more in line with factors like install base so we'll compare Uncharted 2 to that.
Uncharted 2 week one: 835k
Phantom Hourglass week one: 707k
Zelda has legs, Uncharted we don't know about yet.. I know these comparisons aren't very fair to Zelda but it's all we really have.. Twilight Princess would probably have sold around 1.2 million worldwide including GameCube week one, you can still see how well Uncharted 2 has done. Mentioning Halo is stupid.
