Forums - Sony Discussion - GRAN TURISMO PSP Eurogamer Review -- 7/10 (FALL from grace for GT)?!

Let's see. A 7/10 from EG is a great score so that's good. Now, about being able to do what you want in the game, fantastic! This is great. Thank you Sony for giving folks freedom. I'm sure I'd buy it if I had a PSP. This looks to be the best GT yet. It blows GT4 out of the water.

expected honestly. Portable isnt really the most friendly area for racing games. With all the high-res car models there probably wasn't enough space for a career mode.

Arstechnica seemed to like it.  http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2009/09/gran-turismo-psp-review-portable-racing-grows-up.ars

To put it very simply: this is the best portable racing game you can buy at the moment. At times it feels almost like a magic trick; Polyphony has done some amazing things with the hardware. It's very real, however, and in a few weeks it will be here. Save some money in the ol' gaming budget, whether you buy a PSP Go or not, you'll want to pick this game up.

The Good

  • Absolutely stunning, 60FPS graphics
  • The ability to listen to your own music will playing
  • Wide variety of tracks and cars
  • Detailed information and history of cars
  • Races are simple to set up, can be finished in minutes, although longer tracks are available
  • Strong multiplayer, with the ability to both share and trade cars with your friends
  • Zippy loading times when installed to memory stick, UMD release includes the install option

The Bad

  • No online infrastructure mode
  • Cockpit view is just the black shape of the windshield
  • Only four cars in races, in both single and multiplayer
  • A small selection of cars available to buy at the dealership, making it hard to browse all the available vehicles
  • No damage to the cars
  • AI can feel rather artificial and sterile
  • Finding your saved replays is a pain in the ass, because there is no way to simply browse what you've saved; they're arranged by track

The Ugly

  • People who traded in their PSP systems sheepishly buying another unit to play this

Well now, it aint THAT bad after all huh......

please these guys liked LAIR too

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Really? Have any examples....

I expect that... but I'm not "Many people" now am I... But I'm not taking VGC numbers. I'm taking Polyphony Digitals numbers... After all... there is almost 1 million difference between Shipped + DL'ed and VGC numbers for prologue.

Reading between the lines it seems the cars, driving, etc. is all fine its the lack of a career or guiding gameplay device that's the issue.

I wonder why they left it out? Can't have been space, surely? Did PD think that on handheld people would just want to chose a car a track and drive in short bursts? I can't think of any reason not to have it given what is included with the game - it can't be for a technical reason, reading both reviews it seems for the most part they did a good job getting the title on PSP technically.

Mind you, I find the idea of a driving game on a handheld rather perplexing anyway, so what do I know...

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Videogamer.com gave it a 9 http://www.videogamer.com/psp/gran_turismo/review-2.html

I am not sure why you would discount them so quickly.  They are one of the better sites around for unbiased videogame information.

And if we are going to be completely truthful, here is some of their Lair review that you think they liked so much:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2007/09/game-review-lair-playstation-3.ars

"Lair tries to show off both the graphical power of the PS3 and the abilities of the Sixaxis, and is a miserable failure in both endeavors."

Verdict: Skip
System: PlayStation 3
Price: $59.99
Rating: Teen
Developer: Factor 5
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Other recent reviews:

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

how can you give it a 9... no online and no career... makes no sense

this again shows why 9 has become the new 7.

So people cant have fun unless it was those?
