Forums - Sony Discussion - Valve: PS3 Orange Box Players "Got the Stepchild Version"

its horrible that he compares a crappy port of a game to a stepchild... -1 valve

Not sure what the upset is here. They currently don't have anyone in house who can code for the PS3, and they don't want to outsource their games to have them suck, the way The Orange Box did. Yet, people are upset because they won't fork over cash for in house coders who know PS3? Why not get a decent PC or a 360 if you are that eager to play Valve games? Of course, you can always go, "Well Valve sucks!" rather than admit you want to play their games and get a platform to do it.

i kinda understand them. they get a point when saying that they (as customer) want a product, thats equal to the others at the other Consoles.

But do in need Valve Games? Is Half Life/left 4 dead really that good? No, not rly. I can live without them working on PS3, because they´re develop just mediocre games.
The only exeption is Portal, but this is one of the few we got. :>

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Not supporting the PS3 is Valve's decision to make, and it doesn't sound like they did it lightly considering they paid to have someone port the Orange Box. It's expensive to bring talent in-house (benefits, office space, etc.) opposed to simply contracting out a port to a PS3-savvy team, but contracting the port doesn't appear to have met Valve's standards for quality. I see this statement from Mr. Lombardi as a sort of subtle apology to their Sony customers, and a promise to not produce lesser ports in the future. True, it's not the ideal of having Valve promise to create an in-house PS3 team, but few developers/publishers are in a position to start pouring serious money into a new platform, particularly if they're staying in the black without doing so.

There are a number of PC-only developers, including Blizzard, but it's their call to ignore the 90+m current-gen consoles out there, and for many of them it appears to be a sound business model, so I'm not going to second guess them. I have two Mac's at home (I've programmed and used Windows PCs since the day they arrived on the planet, and I no longer care to own them for personal use), and I would love to have Stronghold 2, Dungeon Siege 2, etc. for the Mac, but I'm not going to criticize the publishers for deciding on their own business model. If I want to play those games that badly, then I will switch to a PC or buy Virtual PC for the Mac. Same goes with my 360/Wii... if I want to play Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, etc. badly enough, then I will buy a PS3.

like seriously. They couldn't do anything with PS2, it was inferior to their main stay, PC. This is kinda understandable. Yet now we have PS3, which in a manner of speaking is right on par with most PCs. Yet these guys STILL can't find the necessity to learn the console? I mean PS2's userbase was phenomenal for crying out loud and they still didn't find it important enough.

At this point I just don't see them as very good game developers. They are not in it for the money(PS2 shafting), which is good. They are not in it to see what they can do(PS3). They just seem to be forever frozen in their mindset and don't want to evolve. They rehash the same engines over and over, very little improvements. They don't attempt ANYTHING that isnt typical PC coding it seems.

Valve FTL! I support good gaming companies like Ubisoft, Naughty Dog, GGames, Namco, Media Molecule, SEGA, etc that actually have skillz.

They're making money, staying profitable, etc.  Who says they have to address the market in the way you deem appropriate to be "good game developers"?  Sounds like Blizzard is a REALLY poor developer, as that company refuses to touch any console.

Admit it... you're frustrated that Valve doesn't want to invest heavily in developing for the PS3.  It's not that you think they're not good at developing games.

my translation. Valve is thinking about hiring an internal team to make a port of left 4 dead to the ps3.

I would of thought that valve would enjoy the challenge of coding for the ps3, but they seem too happy reusing a 5 or 6 yr old engine.
