Forums - Sales Discussion - Have Sony found a Halo killer?

The Xbox brand has long since had its shooterbox title removed. The only people who still call it a shooterbox are ignorant or stupid, oftentimes both.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Why do people continue to call games the -killer? For example... multiple games have been hyped as a Halo Killer. Halo can't be killed. It is a title that exists and has been successful (wildly successful). No game will ever change that hence no game will ever kill it.

If GT5 and Forza 3 launched within a week of each other and droves of potential customers dropped GT5 and instead bought Forza 3 then you have a "killer". Other than that scenario, a sucessful game can't be killed unless the conqueror somehow makes the conquered sell negative numbers and go back to zero.

In short, drop the "killer" shit. It's old.

There been a thread going around by a PS3 fanboy claiming that M$ Forza 3 was meant to be a Gran Turismo killer.  So I think its only fair to start a new thread about how Sony been looking for a Halo killer with multiple tries.

Is your definition of "only fair" the same as "beating the horse that died of bruises a few more times"?  I have seen TOO MANY Halo Killer threads, including a number I have personally started myself on this, regarding Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 (the developers won me over to KZ2 in their documentary and I still own the game).

And NO, there is NO HALO KILLER.  Call of Duty (Modern Warfare, etc...) is now argued to be competing as king of FPS on consoles, but outside of that, there is no Halo Killer.  Halo is its own cottage industry, with its own following, and fan base.  They create new modes for it, when bored.  Nothing now will stop that.

In regards to driving games, there is an off chance of MAYBE something topples Gran Turismo, just because the FPS genre is oversaturated with attempts, while driving games have had less attempts, and Halo has still held on to its throne, while Gran Turismo has only really been challenged by Forza.  And the sales numbers for driving genre (particularly sim driving) is smaller.  Of course, you have Mario Kart, but that seems to be its own species.

No.
Probably never will.

Halo is to FPS what Gran Turismo is to Racing and what Mario is to gaming.

Actually, Gran Turismo needs to be put in the category of "driving sims".  I say this, because are insistent that Gears is not in the same category as Halo or Killzone 2.  Mario Kart is now king of racing games, due to the sheer number of copies Mario Kart Wii had sold.

Also bonker, MGS is a stealth game, shooting is only %5 of the game. Uncharted is an action adventure game. Look at what the 360 has, L4D, Halo, Gears

That is NOT how I played MGS4.  I played it the way I played Uncharted and Gears.  I treated it as a FPS.  I used weapons and shot guys up.  Ok, I did a LITTLE bit of stealth, but not a lot.

If a title needs a killer, then the chances are, that title is too big to be killed.

Name me one game that has ever killed the title is was meant to kill?

@bonker but Socom is not an FPS. As far as I knew its a TPS.

The Conduit is going to be the real Halo Killer. But only because HVS included a line of code that destabilizes the atoms of Halo 3 discs, instantly reducing the sales total for Halo 3 to zero!

Really, nothing is an anything killer. Even if Forza 3 is a billion times better than GT5, and sells ten times as well, GT5 is still going to sell really damned good because it's a popular franchise.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

no game will kill halo except Modern Warfare 2 ps3 exclusive

Hmm... agreed.
