Forums - Nintendo Discussion - if only nintendo wouldnt make the same games over and over again

I would be happy with a new Mario,Zelda and a Metroid game every year.

No, you wouldn't. You think you would, but you are failing to take into account something very important: good games take time. If you make the developers rush -and one per year is rushing things- the quality will suffer, and all you will wind up doing is complaining about how these new one-per-year games aren't up to par with the older ones. And you won't be wrong, but you and those like you will have brought it on yourselves, by demanding a situation which inherently hurts quality.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Nintendo does like to go with has worked out well for them previously.

Oh, I'm sorry, it seems like you have either 12 Ratchets in 7 years, or just 9 Ratchets in 7 years, but you were just describing a few. Either way, the truth you revealed makes it look worse.

You missed the very first and biggest point in my post.

R&C is not Sony.

R&C is not developed by Sony.

R&C is Insomniac Games.

They represent themselves... not Sony.

How many times should I have to repeat this?

As a side note, this generation Insomniac seems to be diversifying so good for them.

The way I take it is Nintendo will create new concepts for games, but use existing characters.

For instance Zelda: Majora's Mask could very easily have been a completely new IP, it's 3-day Armageddon system was completely unique.

Mario Galaxy could have starred a new character instead of Mario.

I actually think in many cases, Nintendo is way too conservative.

They go like 5-6 years in between "real" Mario games. Mario 64 was 1996, Mario Sunshine was 2002, Galaxy was 2007. That's a long f-ing time to wait if you ask me.

Only 1 Mario Kart per generation for any given machine so far (blah).

It's been almost 6 years since the last F-Zero. 12 years since the last really good Star Fox game.

7 years since the last Wave Race game.

15 years (lol) between Punch-Out! installments.

Prior to Metroid Prime it had been 8 years between Metroid games.

5 years since the last Donkey Kong platformer (if you count Jungle Beat, 10 years if you're using Donkey Kong 64 as the last true platformer).

On the DS even, any other company would've made New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendogs 2, Animal Crossing DS 2, Brain Training 3/4/5 ... by now .... except Nintendo.

Nintendo is honestly the only video game company in the world that will wait upwards of 3/4/5/6 years to make a sequel to a game that sells 8-15 million copies. Nintendo is also the only game company in the world that actually has more than 3 IPs that people actually give a crap about.

Really think about it ... maybe only Capcom (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter) and Square-Enix after the merger (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts) have three IPs that actually sell big time. Sony has Gran Turismo and God of War and ... uh maybe Ratchet & Clank if you want to count that. Every other publisher has 1, maybe 2 hit IP, when they have 9/10/11/12 blockbuster franchises like Nintendo does, maybe it would be a comparable situation.

@WoW, Ratchet and Clank is a Franchise owned and Published by Sony. Same is true for Resistance. But that doesnt invalidate the point that he was trying to make. Sony is the worst (non EA or Activision) publisher for spamming their successful franchises. Ratchet and Clank is an example. God of War has 4 games in 4 years. Resistance has 3 in 2 years, Jak and Daxter has several, Singstar...oh my god singstar, Uncharted is already being sequeled. The frequency of sony's sequelitis can be compared to COD/Madden/and Mario Party.

@ OP. If anything nintendo is the last publisher that can be accused of such. Just look at Soundwave's post above. Nintendo usually goes several years between sequels and the games are always very new in design, maybe not in plot, but the thing that matters, gameplay, is always new and fresh.

I will double check my facts.  I believe you are wrong.

my take on this :

mario is cool, it's perfect, the reason ( btw im talking about the main series ) it never gets old is the 5 year timespan between them. it's something that doesnt need story that hard, although i would be happy if they didnt use that cunt peach over and over and over, it's nerving, but it doesn't change the fact that the mario games are great and will never change, their mistery is that they always have similiar easy recognizable mascots ( same characters, similar enemies ) mixed with new elements and different settings, all in highest-quality.

this cannot be applied to zelda : the franchise has a claim to be realistic and if you ask me he gameplay is wearing off atm. slowly but sure. it's a real graphics game, it's more serious, it cannot afford that bullsh**story everytime and hell, i enjoyed every zelda game so far but after TP i have to say it : gameplay gets very bad for me from this point on. when i found the bow in TP i was like : 'uuuuuh, they changed the order of items, very impressive'.
Zelda needs a refresh, Zelda needs a mature take on it, Zelda could be much more than repetitive item collecting with a unsatisfying story and no message at all included in it, it has so much more potential.

as far as i can judge after 2 primes, metroid is the same as zelda, it felt 100 % the same, same door system same item system same map. it was fun for me, but as long time metroid fan it would have bothered me for sure.

Nintendo games are all excellent considered them as uniques, but they get worse and worse cause of the lack in refreshment.
Furthermore, their games are no art ( they are fun but they are NOT art like) prince of persia, mirrors edge, portal, okami, psychonauts, so as a more grown and sofisticated gamer you slowly grow out of them.

an equal library of 3 systems ( n64 GC Wii ) cannot lie and speaks a clear language :
Nintendo is a publisher for children in the very first place, adults can have fun with, but in the long run they're not producing for 'gamers'. at least not any longer.

It's ok, there are Ubisoft, Valve, EA, Bioware ( belongs to EA ), Bethesa and others to fill that gap, what I still use my Wii for is MarioKart and guitarhero.

It's ok once you've settled with this, I just wished I hadnt spend 250 € and bought it later in the cycle

-edit : I think Zelda should follow the MGS way too a cinematic experience, but that will never happen

How can 720p be considered HD when it looks like ugly snow grains on my 22'' screen?

I'm not sure which you are refering to. If it's the number of games released in a period of time...that's posible since I wrote that from memory. If it's about Sony owning R&C and Resistance, thats according to the SCE entry at Wikipedia...so it's cant be to trusted.

i have been a big nintendo fan in the past, just take a look at my awesome collection of snes games. i have owned every nintendo system including the wii, but theres something that bothers me about nintendo. they always make the same fucking games each generation!

1. mario games why is it that princess peach gets kidnapped by bowser in every single fucking mario game? okay, she doesnt get kidnapped in mario kart and all those sports spinoffs, but those games dont have a story unlike the platformers and rpgs. how about changing things up a bit, like making peach the final boss in a mario game? now that would kick ass.

2. zelda games link has to save princess zelda from the evil ganon or ganondorf like he is called in latter games. as a kid i didnt notice it, but that somehow sounds like a mario game story. nintendo is really fucking innovative! it would be nice to see link going on his own journey for once, without that stupid princess getting in the way.

3. metroid games finally a series in which you dont have to save a fucking princess all the time, but thats probably because the main character is a woman. still, she has that varia suit in every game and you collect almost always the same items and upgrades to fight those nasty metroids. for once, nintendo should give this basic formula a twist, like making samus almost die at the beginning of a game and the only way she is able to survive is to remove that fucking varia suit she has been using for so long. i am sick of always seeing the same stuff. these are just three and the most popular examples i could think of, but there are more.

if only nintendo wouldnt make the same fucking games over and over again, i could enjoy their games again, like in the glorious snes days when those games felt still fresh and new, because they werent so overdone. had nintendo used some different ideas in their games like the ones i suggested above at least once, this entire rant would be null and void. but alas, nintendo is all about the money and they milk their franchises for all their worth. greedy bastards.

1. Look at the paper mario series, Bowser wasnt always the boss.

2.Majora's mask? Ever played that one?

3. Um did u miss the begining of the the prime games?

"Like you know"

I'm fine with the formulas. Zelda games are basically all a different take on the same concept. It's not the meat that is different, its how its cooked, and when you compare OoT to WW you see just how different it can be. Majoras Mask was utterly amazing, and VERY different in atmosphere to the other zelda games. This was a one time thing and won't be repeated however.. the director for MM was given lots of freedom, and Ninty wont do that again. Point being, Nintendo games make the same things in very different styles, and Im fine with that. I just wish that Nintendo fanboys wouldnt call all fps games the same... or group halo and rainbow six together, or killzone and resistance. Different types of games.
