Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Call of Duty, World at War Wii starting to do that Wii Stealth move?

I finally got time to really look at the Jan. 10 US game sales and I noticed something interesting. While still far behind the HD versions in absolute numbers, CoD WaW Wii is really starting to roll.

A month ago it was 77th, last week it was 41st , this week it is 25th in game sales at 32K. That puts it ahead of Wii Music and only 200 behind Animal Crossing and less than 1K behind SSBB. Quite a change!

Looking at it another way, the Xbox sold an impressive 99K this week but that is only 11% of the launch week numbers. The PS3 sold 54K which is 14% of launch week. At 32K the Wii sales are at 72% of launch week. These are definite signs of a game starting to grow legs and it may yet confound the nay sayers. I can't wait to see the next few weeks.

Who knows where it will wind up but I like the momentum and I'm sticking by my prediction.

What was your prediction?

I do agree that this game seems to be showing quite the legs, and I'd very happily buy the game if it had split-screen. Oh well, 'tis not meant to be. I do hope that this game goes on to sell a nice amount! I highly doubt the next COD Wii game will have splitscreen, but I can hope!

One thing is possible that a title would sell a bit slow at first, but be real good. If a system is selling well, then word of mouth gets out, and people buy the game with the system, and the system gets legs. This would explain some PS3 titles, outside of bundle deals.

We'll have to wait and see--Wii games do tend to have beautiful legs, though.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I don't think anyone is expecting the Wii version to outsell the HD versions in total sales (are they?) but it was pretty clear that they'd have different sale patterns over time. World at War is huge partly because it's a great game and partly because of Modern Warfare. A hotly anticipated sequel is going to have big opening numbers. But on the Wii, without Modern Warfare to build that base, sales would naturally be slower off the start.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

One of the main reasons it was so down in the listings a month ago is because it was undertracked. Go back now and you'll find it's moved up a few spots from 77th.

I've seen some estimates based on NPD's December rankings that figure 350k or more sales for this game in December. Now consider that VGC has it at about 250k for all Americas in the month of December, and that's after a 100k upwards adjustment.

I guess my point is that CoD Wii's VGC ranking in recent weeks is probably more reflective of the game's actual sales than its VGC ranking a month ago.

Edit:

Here's my source:

The 370k-487k range is due to announcements that Shaun White Wii sold 370k in December, while Wii Music sold 478k. CoD Wii ranked higher than Shaun White, and lower than Wii Music. There are quite a few titles in between CoD Wii and Wii Music, so actual numbers probably fall near the bottom of that range.

@Grampy :
Did you checked other games? Is any other games increasing their sales like this?

Btw,this's interesting.I'll keep my eye on it. :)

I knew a good game would get good sales by word of mouth I'm glad to see it succeed.

MaxwellGT2000 - "Does the amount of times you beat it count towards how hardcore you are?"

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

Heck that means WaW is at least 375 in America alone in December, add in the rest of NA and November sales and realistically it's got to be over 600k in NA alone for '08. If Europe is similarly undertracked it'll have 300k sales there which means it'll likely be a million seller by the end of January!!! Fantastic! Who says FPS can't sell on Wii??

Hope ioi adjusts accordingly.

Not thoroughly by any means, I tend to go through looking for games that seem "out of place" at least in terms of my expectations. I've also been keeping more of an eye out for this game. What cought my eye was a cluster of Wii games right around this point. That made it quite clear that CoDWaW had passed Wii Music, was neck and neck with ACCF, and was pulling up to SSBB. That surprised me and I went back and confirmed that it really was coming to life.
