Forums - Gaming Discussion - Best upcoming indie games of 2009

The indie-scene has grown more and more interesting lately. 2009 seems to be a really interesting year with some awesome projects being released.

I'm not really connected to the indie-scene, so I'm going to need all your help with this one. Please let me know if you find any really interesting projects, and I'll add them.

Love

This is an insanely stylish online FPS with a generated user-editetable gameworld. Don't know what that means? Me neither. Just look at the screenshots, and watch the video!

The Unfinished Swan

This is another really stylish First person game, but this one is called a First Person Painter. Yet again, a video says more than a thousand words.

Crayon Physics Deluxe

A puzzling physics game, set in a world of physics with crayon graphics, this game won first price at the Independent Games Festival 2008! Again, the video says it all:

Releasedate: Out now! (Jan 9th)
Platform: PC
Price: $20
Metacritic rating: 79

Fez

A 2d/3d game in the same spirit as Crush and the latest Paper Mario, Fez is almost too good looking for its own good. Sadly, the canadian based developer Kokoromi's blog has not been updated for almost a year. What happened?

Blueberry Garden

Erik Svedäng's (World of Pong) latest project, Blueberry Garden features a complete eco-system as well as an experiment in game storytelling and amazing visuals.

Releasedate: June 8th
Platform: PC/Steam
Price: 5€

Osmos

(Courtesy of Noname)

Osmos appears to be a 2d version of Katamari Damacy. Collect smaller cells to grow, and avoid bigger cells. Also, accellerating your lifeform shrinks it, so move wisely. This game is all about the serene ambience. Download the demo!

Releasedate: Out now!
Platform: PC/Steam
Price: 9€

Night Game

Designed by Nicklas Nygren, Night Game is an action-puzzle game that focuses on providing players with an ambient gameplay experience, challenging the mind with increasingly challenging picturesque worlds. Each level is broken into different areas in which the player must maneuver a ball and using realistic physics to advance through each level. There are no enemies, per se, and no violence in Night Game -- it's all about the experience.

Limbo

Designed and programmed by Arnt Jensen, this is a Danish platformer with tons of style. So far information beyond this point is hard to come by, but I await the final product anxiously.

Zeno Clash

Zeno Clash is my favorite, its bizarre and yet beautiful visual is really surprising. Zeno Clash is a First Person Brawler. It features some of the best hand to hand combat I've ever seen from a first person perspective.

FPS/Fighting

Releasedate: Out now!
Platform: PC (Steam)
Price: 16€
Metacritic rating: 78

The Path

Descriptive text stolen from the homepage: The Path is a short horror game inspired by older versions of Little Red Ridinghood, set in modern day. The Path offers an atmospheric experience of exploration, discovery and introspection through a unique form of gameplay, designed to immerse you deeply into its dark themes. Every interaction in the game expresses an aspect of the narrative. The six protagonists each have their own age and personality and allow the player to live through the tale in different ways. Most of the story, however, relies on your active imagination.

Eduardo The Samurai Toaster

You don't really need more than the name for this to be an instant add to the wishlist. But I'll post the video anyway.

It frustrates me a bit to see the level of non-commitment on this site to games that fall outside the regular gamers area. I find the indie-scene to be where the most interesting projects gather, and though there is a lot of really bad games out there, the gems feel so much more precious and important.

Please, someone tell me what you think the most important, intersting or beautiful indie game out there, or I will be forced to abandon hope in the VGC community...

That's because 99% of the indie scene is on PC, and this site is extremely console-oriented. The list I made of 2009 PC exclusives has alot of indie games, though there's no doubt that I might be missing a few gems since there's sooo many good indie developers.

By the way, LOVE is an adventure game - a MMOA (Massive Multiplayer Adventure) to be precise. I personally WANT this game, and I think it will revitalize the Adventure genre entirely by showing how to evolve it. You'll be able to change everything in the game world or destroy it - the entire environment is editable/destroyable.

Here's what he says about the gameplay: http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/gameplay.html

Love is easy

Love is played form a first person view, because you should see the world not yourself. The controls of Love are designed to be a simple as possible to let you engage more in the story. Not dumbed down, but purified. All the mechanics designed to act as story devices to help the narrative. Each server has about 200 people registered, but as the same people comeback again and again you can make friends and get story continuity. With so few players you can get to know most of them and you can matter to the world. When you go to play Love its not just to see what is going to happen, its to see what has happened since your last play session too.

Shared World

In the world you can find a "Token" that lets you create a settlement. In this settlement the terrain is deformable so that you can build houses, caves of what ever else you want. Other players can join your settlement to help you develop it and protect it. When you go out in the world you can find other tokens that you can put in your settlement giving you new tools and things you can build. Once a token has been placed in a settlement any one in that settlement can use it so all resources are shared among the community. If you bring in new Tokens to the community it will matter for everyone not just you. This system forms the basis of the social gaming structure of Love, as players are never competing against each other and are always playing against AI characters.

Building Structure

The building system lets you not only deform the terrain and place out object like trees, it also lets you lets you create infrastructure. Various object can be connected to work together by setting Coordinates, Radio frequencies and keywords. For instance you can set up a sensor, that sends a keyword over a radio frequency to open a door. This system is also used by infrastructure built by AI characters. By studying infrastructure the players can "hack" it by sending commands over the right frequencies. This system lets players build intricate relation sips, but it also sets up plot as the players will need to manipulate enemy installations, like deactivating shields, opening doors, and cut power to enemy weapons.

All I can say is: <3 LOVE

I don't like indie games. Patapon was quite good though.

A lot of those seem promising, especially the swan one. Thanks for the heads-up.
Although my personal nomination would have to be Cave Story for WiiWare, assuming you're willing to count it.

Have you checked out Osmos? It seems like it could be a serene, yet challenging, game.

Crayon Physics Deluxe is really good. Played a trial version or so in 2008

wow looks good but I have a feeling its gonna be short and get boring fast, but hey, who knows.

I have Crayon Physics Deluxe and it's flipping fantastic! Anyone that like World of Goo or likes Drawn to Life and the idea of Scribblenauts needs to check this game out. Seriously it's awesome, and it'll run flawlessly on almost anyone's setup.

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

I bought Crayon Physics deluxe. It's really creative and my wife loves it.

I'm very interested in that Blueberry garden game.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.
