Forums - Nintendo Discussion - "Metroid Channel" thoughts...

It would be smarter for them to make this part of the WiiConnect24 features, instead of having me go and download these channels manually.

Example...

I turn on my Wii.... WTF METROID CHANNEL!1!!!!!!?! OMFG!.... I am buying this game. Then after a few day it goes a way. And I am sad, but now I have to buy the game... Then I turn it on another day and OMFG Battalion Wars Channe!!!

You get the point. What is the point of always on if they are using it.

(Oh, and I though Wii could read upto DVD9? 9 gigs right, not 5? I don't know though)

I think Metroid will be a special case. Most games will never have a dedicated channel.

Hence my reasoning that if its purely for advertising, they should release a "Games Coming" (or similar) channel.

It will be interesting to see if they go down the "advertising" route re: games on the system. Will this be open to other companies? What about DS games? Its not like you can purchase/play the game directly from the Wii - you still need to head to a store and purchase it...

re: DVD9 - not sure, but I thought it was a 4.5GB version of the same discs that the GC used (physically larger). I don't think they are actually DVD-9 discs (I doubt you can read them in a PC or other players).

It's a standard DVD with special security measures on the disc.  It is most definately DVD 9 compatable.  The PS2 was also DVD9 compatable but most games on that system were in the 2GB range.  I think one of the only 4.5+GB game I have is Final Fantasy 12.  (No my PS2 is not modded)

I really like what they did with the Metroid Prime 3 Preview channel as-is. It's a separate little applet that has a Metroid-esque look and feel -- having the videos on a generic Wii Preview page wouldn't be nearly as buzzworthy. Even though it's just a simple title screen, menu, and a revealable image, it still takes the viewer from the Wii look-and-feel into the Metroid universe briefly.

And I really like the trailer -- first time in a long while the Nintendo logo has appeared in a very cool context.

It's just an ad but it's nice to see something new (better than those VHS tapes Nintendo used to mail out in the N64 days...)

Those VHS tapes were HORRIBLE!  I remember I got the DK Country one, Nintendo 64 preview and Star Fox 64 one...  Damn those videos were bad...

I have a feeling that it seems a little weird to create a channel and then after the game comes out have it being 'useless' as such.

I'm with shams on this one, I believe it will convert into the WiiConnect24 Metroid Channel once the game arrives and the WiiConnect24 features are discovered...

I'm really like the potential of stuff like this!!! Big games can have some very awesome and interesting ideas attached.

Original poster, I'm not sure if you're completely retarded. Of course it's a way to promote the game..... Common.... just use a little bit of common sense.

Lay off the personal attacks, that's a warning.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

*cries* Why do I have a PAL Wii? *cries again*

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.

Are you actually going to give any reasons, or just call me a retard - and expect your opinion to be used as gospel?

Got my eye on you mr-money...

@all - Its obvious why there isn't a PAL version yet, no?

i) The game won't be out here for 2 months. If it launches October 27th, expect exactly the same release schedule as the US one gets (i.e. October will be our Metroid month).

ii) With all the voice acting in the game, a PAL/Europe release could take a bit of work - if they intend to  convert the voices to every supported language.

...

At least we have Metroid available now on the VC - and may even get Super Metroid before October.

...

@Darklight - you are right. The spec does allow for dual layer, 8.5GB discs. It however also does say that its the same format as the GC disc - "The disc is a proprietary version of the eight centimeter DVD (MiniDVD) format". This is not the same format as DVD-9, although the Wii may be able to read normal DVDs as well.

Quake4 maps are 10megs+. I followed a project. Doom3 engine can do it. Or something to that extent where some of the best modders in the world, worked together to create a wide open city, that was alive. And when I say... Alive, I mean, people walked around, there were day/night cycles, and everything. On 1 map. If I recall correctly that was around 150-200 megs.

...

Quake 4 (and virtually every PC project) never really worries about space. I'm actually pretty shocked how bid (and wasteful) so many PC games have become - its ridiculous. Its assumed everyone has gigs of available space, so speed/access always takes preference over size.

I'll say again - the ENTIRE of GoldenEye fits within 16MB. Its definitely possible, but whether they will take this route - pure speculation for now.

@lenardo - Nintendo will never force people to download a LOT of content anytime they want to play a game. It just doesn't make sense. At worst, I suspect a compromise where one level is available at anytime - and you might have to download another if you want to play it. But even that seems unlikely IMO.

I like this thread. I hope your right shams. Stuff like that would be amazing! But I have to say this tho.

A High Quality 3D model, with animations, textures, sounds, effects, a few extra menu options, and some other assorted fun things. (a few new characters, and other nice stuff) Could easily reach 100-200 megs. 10-20x bigger than those videos. The video's were streamed off a Nintendo server. You never download the videos.

EDIT: A good example. Look at a MMO when they add a new 'dungeon' They usually range anywhere from 70-400 megs. And I'm not talking one of the 'beautiful' ones either, their more like 300+ for their 'added content'.

Point here is, a new level with Prime3 style graphics. (Say it took you 15 minutes to run through it) Would be I'd say at least 100-200 megs. Or almost a quarter of the entire wii's storage.)

Just pointing out the problem with this. (If they find a way to fix that tho, without me paying for it... That'd be great. :D

Fixing this is just too easy. When you have a new dungeon, you send all the textures in it. That is thereal size of the dungeon. All they have to do is have all the textures on the DVD and upload only the level design.

Too easy. :P
