Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What do you think of the GameCube's controller?

Probably the best designed controller any system has had. Every button being a differentshape wasn't a bad thing, it was brilliant. It was completely ergonomic. There are always times I'd get one button confused with another throughout my gaming life (the Sega Genesis controller was probably the worst in this way and, hell, pretty much every way). Much, much less with the Gamecube controller.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

I absolutely loved it. Easily the best controller of last gen, imho.

I loved the Cube controller, best last gen.

Nintendo still doomed?

hrm.. maybe it's an aquired taste then, (I spent most of my console gaming time last gen on the PS2/Xbox....) I will agree that it was a lot more comfortable to hold than the DS2, but the z-button totally sucked imo.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

The only problem I had/have with it is the Z-button.

It was perfectly placed on the N64 but not on the GC...

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Best controller since the joystick! It renewed my interest in gaming which lapsed between SNES and last gen. I remember picking up a N64 controller and wondering what I was suppose to do with it. It seemed so bulky and complicated which made me stick to the SNES through the late 90's. I was talked into trying the PS2 and Xbox and could handle them on certain games, but when I picked up the GC controller it was a perfect match. I now can handle any of the contollers, but had the GC controller not put me at ease with current gaming, I would be completely uninteresed with the gaming world now.

Out of the three controllers, it was tied for second with the DS2, but lightyears better than the original XBOX.

Things that sucked on it. The C-stick. Which was a horrible 2nd analog stick. Also, the way that the analog stick is sectioned off like a octagon, instead of rounded pisses me off. But I liked the asymmetrical buttons in hindsight. And I loved the L and R triggers. It felt extra comfortable in my hands.

I like the octoganal sticks, it means you can push it to the 8 corners really easily, and if you want to go slightly in-between you can adjust from there.
With the circular sticks you have to find the top/bottom/left right by adjusting using what happens on screen, so if your thumb naturally moves it slightly to the left when you try straight up (I have long thumbs, might be somthing to do with it) you have to adjust.

It was great, finally a good ergonomic control, the Z button didn't fit, but other than that it is the best of the last gen...

The octagonal sticks was really good in games like Smash Bros, but it just always felt weird to me.  It didn't get in the way of playing games, just a minor annoyance.

Indeed, the best last gen. Plus it introduced (a good working) wireless.
