Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony cry: Wii is Just "Impulse Purchase"

superchunk said: Kwaad, you mention only two games of intrest to you in Nintendo's lineup. I am assuming you just don't like the classic Nintendo titles like Zelda or Mario? What about SM Galaxy. Every editor I have read said it is on par with SM64, you mention it was the last one you liked. What about red steel, wii sports or play, battalion wars, Dragon Quest, Project Hammer, Sadness just to name a few of interestingly fun games. Plus the many multi console ports that I think will play better on the wii, though not look as good. I prefer great gameplay and good visuals over good gameplay and great visuals. I agree with you on the 360 and borrow the unit that I bought for my little brother every so ofter when a good games comes out like gears of war. However, on the PS3, all of there once great exclusives are jumping ship and becoming multi-platform items. There are only what a few exclusives left that aren't published by Sony? In terms of ports, Nintendo has the best situation. Xbox has only 2 geat IP's that are MS published, Gears of War and Halo. Sony has about 4, and Nintendo has 10 or so. All of the 3rd party devs are starting to put ports of their best items on all machines because building games is just too expensive to keep it exclusive, plus porting to Nintendo is the least expensive option. As Wii's base build to nearly match that of 360 by years end you will see 3rd parties have ports of all of their best titles to 360 and Wii and Sony will have no more 3rd part exclusives. Sony will be in 3rd due to it not having a much greater hardware tech than 360 and those that want visuals will buy the less expensive maching that has all of the same games. The 1st/2nd place will be between 360/Wii. 360 for hard core, who will also pu probably all machines anyways, and Wii for casuals and families. That might put Wii in the same boat as DS, which is a great arguement to show that Wii could very well blow them both out of the water. My personal prediction.
I own a wii and I can assure the only multiplatform game that play better on the Wii right now is raving rabbids. I want to get excited about galaxy and I love SM64 to death but sunshine left a bad taste in my mouth and I am more apprehensive about galaxy. Again with this exclusive jumping crap. Why is it that no one says that about the 360? The only and I mean "ONLY" game that made me bat an eye when they said it was going multi was Virtua fighter 5 other than that the rest seemed given. While the PS3 also gets bioshock, saints row, splinter cell, enchant arms and quite a few others people are more worried about bladestorm and fatal inertia going multi? You have to be kidding.

Zelda is multiplatform, so it does not count. Watching the video, The new mario is just as much about controlling mario, as controlling his new little fairy friend, he stole from zelda. Since when did mario have fairy friends? Since when did mario fly in space? SSBB and Metroid Prime3 are the only 2 games that are on my must buy list for the Wii. I was hopeing for a more traditional mario. That's what I want. Mario rideing yoshi through a level eating mushrooms, getting big, spitting fire, jumping down sewer pipes, and flying with his yellow cape. Possibly even allow you to get diffrent color yoshi's that have diffrent attributes... kinda like SMW. Watching what I have seen it looks like it might be the most fun mario since Mario64, but it's another 'mario sunshine' to me. Mario sunshine was fun. But mario was never a fireman. Red Steel is horrible. 2nd worst game I've played in along time. Only beaten by NFSwii. Wii sports is fun, but it's too small, and not enough... meat... for me to consider it very imporant. The theory is there. but that's it. Dragon Quest is a big one, but on that point I like Tales, and FF the most. Your multiconsole ports are questionable. Check this. http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html the PS3 has almost that many exclusives. I dont think it will get too many ports, becuase the graphics are so far down, they will actually have to build it a second graphcis engine/texture set. wich makes it the MOST expensive to make a port to. Not to mention trying to figure out how to implement the controlls for the Wii. And Batallion Wars. would be great with online play.(really great) If it does not have online play, or it uses Nintendos online service. I wont buy it. (hah, nintendo is makeing it, so what is the chances it wont use their grabage. so I plan on not buying it) the x-box has more than 2 great IPs. And I dont consider GoW one of them. I have both Wii and PS3. I'm buying the good games for the Wii. I just plan on buying ALOT of PS3 stuff this year. The Wii has maybe 3 or 4.

Kwaad said: Well my local walmart, that I know gets shipments of 5-10/week, has only 1. Wich is saying 80 or 90% sellout. I've been to toysRus, Bestby, and they are not "everywhere" like the x-box 360s. I would have to say, they are selling very well. Considering the 500/600$ pricepoint. You can buy a Wii EASILY on 1 paycheck. Unless your liveing in a 50,000$+/year household, the PS3 is NOWHERE near as easy to buy. eg: working full time at wal-greens working as a photo tech. (one of the better paying jobs in town) you make 200 weekly. that means 3 weeks to afford a PS3. wich will put you to 200$ for everything else. The Wii... can still leave you with 600$. Not quite enough, but not gonna leave you without a home. The PS3 you need to save for. The Wii. You dont.
You don't work for Sony do you? I recently toured the better part of Asia (China, HK, Singapore, Taiwan). There wasn't a single Wii or Wii accessory anywhere to be seen (including import stores). However, several places had "piles" of PS3's sitting around - both the 20 & 60Gig versions. Not only were they not selling, people were walking past completely disinterested. WiiSports has almost sold 1million units in Japan - and its only been out for 2 months. No PS3 titles in the top 20, and new (big budget) titles are bombing out. I don't think a PS3 title has even hit 100,000 sales yet - and its been out for almost a month later. A Wii costs $400AU here in Australia - I was at the midnight launch, and it was incredible. No retail has had a unit for over a month - and the only way you can get one is to preorder, and hope. This is almost 2 months after the original launch. There is no way *400*AU is a "impulse" buy - impulse is closer to $20/$50 (or even $99). (the PS3 will launch here in 2 months - for over $1000...)

Did Sony launch in China or HK? I thought it was only Japan and NA. Although there were alot of exporters that bought systems in the Japanese market and most likely selling them 2 times what they paid for them. Sony has 3 titles over 100,000 in Japan alone. So to say they have none over 100,000 is being unreasonable. You don't work for "ms or nintedo" do you? I was under the impression that their "big budget" games were not coming out till March. VF does not lunch till Feb 8 in Japan which VF is doing very well in the arcade which should translate into sales. We will find out the week after the 8th if that is true.

At $250 versus $600, one can only guess which one would garner a more impulsive buy. Eitehr way, Sony is whining because they can't ship or sell enough of their overpriced POS3's.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

You see my side. Galaxy does not look like a traditional mario. That being said, means I probibally wont like it. Not saying it wont be fun. But name it something else. "Space Plumber" or something. Oh wait, you wouldnt get the millions of lemmings to buy it without thinking without the mario name. I want to beleive in mario. But I'm looseing faith. I havent ever played on a PSP, but the games look so much more fun than the DS. I bought 2 DS' expecting them to be 'da'shizzle' So far... 1/2 the games I've bought are either cones of a classic, and the other half... sucked. I just havent found (many) games for the DS that feel like they use the touch screen as a advantage. An example of why I feel the wiimote is a handicap, for alot of games. That would be like back when the mouse was new, trying to make a whole game work off the mouse. Games like X, X2, and X3... have minimal mouse use. And X3 is the only one that really lets you use it. And no-matter how they would use it. it would suck. My point is, it is the same theory on the Wii. The Wii got rid of the 2nd analog stick. (very imporant in alot of games... a analog stick like the PSP has where the digital controls are, would have made it 10x better. Moveing the -(house)+ buttons up half a inch, would be nice too. And then possibly add a second trigger on the Wiimote. With that layout, the Wii would be just as capable as any other system. (from the controller) I expect some fun stuff from the Wii. but I dont expect alot. (I expect a diffrent type of fun from the PS3... why I dont expect alot)

"Since when did mario have fairy friends?" ROFL Be real tho. I hav'nt even seen a Nintendo Wii on the shelves! It seems PS3 be piling up.. I'm in seattle, Wa and my brother lives in Los Angeles, Ca and its the same thing over there too(Thanks to my bro for buying my Wii).. Sony isn't failing. They are just getting whooped by the OG's, Nintendo. It really is nothing they should be ashamed of. Nintendo, unlike sony, acually thinks outside of the box. So winners reep benefits and you know the rest..

Thank you. Someone who likes the Wii that understands. the PS3 is not failing. it is doing VERY well. selling 1/2 the units... means sony is brining is as much, if not more gross$$. Wich means more money is being sent to sony. (at least almost the same... no profit for sony tho... but they can afford it) I agree seriously. the Wii is 250$. It is cheap. and it has alot of... potiental. My point is. For the next year I expect the Wii on top. My only point is QA. the Wii has this. http://www.gameinformer.com/Games/Review/200703/R07.0123.1515.25765.htm (farcry) http://www.gameinformer.com/Games/Review/200703/R07.0116.1629.31585.htm (wario ware) (read the 2nd opinion. you can do everything in 2 hours. I did too. for a 50$ game... that's steep) And actually looking through there... I like their reviews alot. they seem... unbiased. They smash alot of games. (and I mean smash... most their games get a 7 or 8) I find it hard to beleive some of the PS3 numbers they give (never played the games so I wont argue the point) but I saw 1 9.5 and 2 9.0's for the PS3... the Wii has 1 10.0, and then 8.5 is next in line.

Ok, but we all agree that Far Cry for the Wii shouldn't even be considered a game...it's horrendous. Honestly, I'm a Wii fan, just cause it's fun and/or will be fun soon. But the PS3 is good, too. Too expensive for me, but has some good games coming out this year. The Wii has a lot of potential though. The third party support will bring some great games other than SSBB and Metroid. Heck, even SSX Blur looks fun. Disaster and Heroes too. I think the Wii will stay up high past this year. Maybe the 360 or PS3 will pass it up, but it's not going to be by much.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Kwaad said:Mario is a plumber, not a fireman. Mario is made out of pixels, not paper. And mario sure as hell, aint no austranut. And he does NOT have a farie for a friend.
Mario has always been a changing concept, like Miyamoto has stated. First he was a carpenter (Donkey Kong arcade), then he was a plumber (Super Mario) and in SMB 3 he was a frog, raccoon, statue, a hammer thrower etc. Yet many (like me) think SMB3 was the best Mario of all time. btw. Mario is not an "austranut" in Galaxy, nor does he have a "farie" friend (at least that I know of)
