Mario has always been a changing concept, like Miyamoto has stated. First he was a carpenter (Donkey Kong arcade), then he was a plumber (Super Mario) and in SMB 3 he was a frog, raccoon, statue, a hammer thrower etc. Yet many (like me) think SMB3 was the best Mario of all time.
btw. Mario is not an "austranut" in Galaxy, nor does he have a "farie" friend (at least that I know of)
