Forums - Sales Discussion - Why do people predict a massive boost for Sony and crushing defeat for MS?

@Chris the great Sony already broke even on the playstation brand when they had a profitable 3rd quarter in that division. Also Fnac and game beg to differ with your claim of no big chain stores in spain that sell games Edit: PC City also begs to differ

Hi, i'm solojohlo and i'm pretty fucking awesome

I guess you are right.  Maybe gaming message boards will be a better place to get my financial advice.  Should I cancel my Bloomberg subscription?

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

You do realize the statistics in that article are incorrect?  Microsoft would have needed to ship 14 million consoles over the last year for a 40% reduction to be 9.1 million.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

who knows what will happen for sure. I mean is there any technical reason why ms could not introduce a slimline 360 early 09. that would imo give it a real boost in sales.

You say that but i have lived in spain and Italy and they don't have the big chains Like Curry's and largs supermarkerts. They have lots of indipenedent stores. So getting the right numbers is impossible. And the counties without a second source of stats are the ones where the PS3 sales difference is the most, thats all I am saying. I think for UK, Germany and US the sales are probably within 10 - 15 %, the rest could be anywere... and that puts a big ? over the numbers. Don't you think it is funny that Sony don't give a EU breakdown, if it was my company I would love to show MS that I was selling more than them, but they don't. That just makes me wonder.

Sony and MS both stopped giving territorial breakdowns last year.   Sony also changed their reported figure method from units manufactured to units sold to retailers.  Why they stopped reported units breakdowns for the different territories is beyond me but Sony does as Sony does.

As for the validy, we can only grant credibility based on their accuracy elsehwere.  Why should we remove their validty in EU if they credible elsewhere?   On top of this, how exactly is it that Sony is supposed to know how many units MS has sold in EU?   If they are claiming they are outselling MS by X amount, how do they know?  You claim it is impossible to get valid numbers because of the independant nature of retail there.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

^ That's why this discussion is only speculation and it all predictions will probably be wrong....

There is no way to know what will happen in the next week, let alone by the end of the gen..

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

I didn't realize that.  What will be the correct percentage drop when MS ships 9.1 million consoles this year?

While I don't agree when people are saying what's in the thread title, I do think it's interesting to see the PS3 matching or selling better (at whatever amount that may be) against the 360 when hearing crap about how much the games suck, the lack of any games, how expensive the hardware is, and stuff like that. As others have said, the fact that the PS3 had kept up with the 360 when the 360 had some great exclusive games is pretty crazy and I'm interested in seeing how the PS3's big exclusive games will affect sales, if at all.

Anyway, what I think is funny about this thread is that people are saying that the PS3 will crush the 360, which is in contrast to when people said (or still do?) that the 360 will crush the PS3, which is in contrast to the original Sony hype that had people going that the PS3 will crush the 360.

What a wobbly teeter totter, lol.
