Interestingly enough even in their own era, it scored higher than FFVII. It was and remains better than it. 24fps wasn't a flaw, that's how most games ran on the N64. It wasn't noticeable then. You talk about not executing the concepts well enough, because WW and TP improved upon it (according to you). Well FFVII was improved upon by FFIX (except the story) games get refinements over time. But in their era, Ocarina was not only much more impressive a game, but was the definition of a masterpiece. Your opinion is in the minority, especially when it comes to control and headache inducing framerate. I don't remember getting headaches from it, but then again some people get seizures while playing games. |
Final Fantasy VII was called "quite possibly the greatest game ever made" when it came out. Many outlets from that time praised it to no end, and there was nothing bigger than that game when it came out. Even players who weren’t interested in that type of games prior to its release, were intrigued by it and got into it.
So what will it be? It came out prior to Zelda, so you should apply your reasoning and also say that "for its time it was exceptional and a masterpiece. No other games was doing what it did when it came out."
Or do you only reserve this kind of arguments when it suits you?
And yes, 24fps was a flaw ( especially considering it wasn’t even a steady 24fps). It made the game stutter. The same way games that stutter are considered flawed these days. Mario 64 ran at mostly 30fps. Most games were locked at 20, which is better than 24, since it is a multiple of 60, most TV’s refresh rate.
Couple the stuttering fps with the muddy visuals, and yes, my eyes never really enjoyed playing such games on the N64.
Thankfully, the Cube addressed all of that, and most games were locked at either 30 or 60. The N64 was simply chewing more than it could with many of its games, from a technical point of view.
