Too bad Trump is a SEGA guy.

People love to bash on companies that ship labor overseas for using slave labor basically and yet as soon as it affects them they are no longer humanitarians.

I've heard my whole life growing up how cheap labor is in China and other places and how horrible it is. Now we are celebrating it cause Trump is the one that puts his foot down?

No one is giving a China a pass for how they tend to treat workers. They are just dismissing tariffs as a way to combat it.

Tariffs will only make things worse for the cheap labor, got to work even cheaper to beat the tariffs. Consumers and workers will pay the price for those tariffs while Trump can sluice the profits of the extra taxes to the rich.

I love games just as much as others on this site, and I want to pay a little as possible without sacrifice of quality. But my priorities are country before console gaming. I do believe in freedom in consumer choice, but China as an economic power does have an advantage in pricing due to lower cost in material and wages whether it's unfair or not. It's not even a political issue because myself and others work in the steel industry so I'm all for leveling the economic playing field to help my family and other families financially survive. So more specifically, it's family before gaming. If you don't have or know families that can be affected by this, at least make it country before gaming. Bottom line, get your priorities straight. Let's not get blinded by creature comforts, and let's not get blinded by politics.

So you are saying that instead of $3 an hour, China is going to beat these tariffs by paying their workers $2 an hour? Hope you enjoy your $100 saving on your one time console purchase from that slave labor.

Oh, so Trump is going to tax companies that manufacture and ship from China, and then take that money he got and give it back to those same people?

Wow you sure cracked the case. Better go tell CNN, they would love to blow the lid open on all of this.

Sometimes being called a genius is having to point out the obvious to others because... it's so obvious that it needs to be pointed out to those who can't see it.

"The tariff history of the United States spans from 1789 to present. The first tariff law passed by the U.S. Congress, acting under the then-recently ratified Constitution, was the Tariff of 1789. Its purpose was to generate revenue for the federal government (to run the government and to pay the interest on its debt), and also to act as a protective barrier around newly starting domestic industries.[1] An Import tax set by tariff rates was collected by treasury agents before goods could be unloaded at U.S. ports.

Tariffs have historically served a key role in the nation's foreign trade policy and as a source of federal income. Tariffs were the greatest (approaching 95% at times) source of federal revenue until the Federal income tax began after 1913. For well over a century the federal government was largely financed by tariffs averaging about 20% on foreign imports.

Tariffs are now employed, among other cases, in the present trade war with China."

I got no problem with China. I got a problem with the FED. Imports come at a higher price, and I keep all of my earnings. Like in the original deal.

In before "Well who's going to pay for the roads if there's no income tax?!"

Far as I know, Our income tax and social security are used, in collusion with ~20 trillion $$ debt to the Federal Reserve, to fund 20 years of murder and invasion of Middle Eastern Lands. I know I can find a better use with my earnings than to give it to which ever mass murderer happens to be in charge of our military.

Why aren’t they allowed to be advanced? And what difference does 5 years make?

Are you content on having an undemocratic state like China in being technologically dominant ?

Currently, America has global hegemony because nearly all nations rely on American technology. Are you prepared to see a future where the rest of the world cedes their technological sovereignty from America to China ? With China, by making the rest of the world and especially the western world dependent on it's technology means that China can become the new de facto global hegemony of this world where they intentionally have nefarious plans that only look out purely for their own self interest ...

If that happens then what of NATO as well ? Can you not see the conflict of interest this poses for NATO members when they have to rely on Chinese technology if they don't take actions that go contrary to NATO's interests or they face the threat of a blockade of buying technology from China ? Think about it for a second, if NATO members relied heavily on using Chinese technology for decades should they heed words from the US or China ? A high possibility is open in the future where China could have the ability to destroy NATO from the inside out without even so much as to lift a finger ...

Globalization is a very dangerous game. We could either end up having the US as the world leader which has a record of at least respecting western liberal democracies like Europe or we end up with China being the world leader where just about every sovereign state is in some form or way unwillingly subservient to the CPC because they don't want to go back to the "dark ages" so to speak ...

5 years would make a noticeable difference IMO since it could seriously stunt the growth of China and contain their influence on the rest of the world far longer by as much as the next 15 years ...

Why do you think it'd "stick it to China"?

We're talking about a country that is literally building 10's of millions houses just to keep its economy growing.  We're talking about a country that is literally building islands in order to be a bigger player in trade.

China is going to go to great lengths to get better, regardless of what road blocks the US puts up.

We're also talking about a country that's guilty of industrial espionage at a large scale ...

China is indeed going at great lengths to get better but they're also getting more desperate as well to move to higher value goods/services. Not sure if the western world would appreciate that considering China would be able to dump their stuff more easily and businesses located in the west would have to close since it likely wouldn't be profitable for them to operate anymore ...
