I have to say I was disappointing to see they didn't give a glamorous treatment to the reboot. This could have been an AAA beat them up that have been missing on the market.

Oh yeah, AAA Battletoads game?

I'm waiting for the AAA Altered Beast game. These are the massive, mega budget projects that the masses are demanding!

I'm responding from Bizarro World by the way...

I played Altered Beast on PS2 and was midly fun. Certainly I would welcome an AAA Altered Beast game. Not sure why you think Battletoads couldn't be AAA. At the time of the original they were cutting edge, as were other Rare games that came after.

For me it is stranger that people would be excited that after 30 years they are bringing the game but on a lesser form. This isn't a no name game, it is one with great cult following, and to revive it needs to be top notch or don't bother with it.

I wouldn't say its strange that people actually like what they see. We don't know if the game is a disappointment yet as no one has played the full game. Battletoads as a franchise has always changed its art direction and this is just another attempt at cracking a market that doesn't welcome these type of games anymore.

Lets wait and see how well Battletoads actually plays because that's the more important part of this franchise. I never played Battletoads because of the visuals, I played it for the whacky fun and rewarding gameplay it offered with a mix of variety of level designs. Jim Sterling said in his recent video that he actually likes the art direction and it actually fits into what the Battletoads actually are and after seeing more gameplay of it, I agree with him.

In saying all that, we probably all expected to see them play it safe and use the SNES/Arcade designs however sometimes a risk like this could be what this franchise needs and could possibly put this game out of the niche market and onto the bigger stage again if successful.. but if it fails.. well they can always go back to making another game using the SNES/Arcade designs on another attempt. I personally don't mind the designs I just didn't expect it and that's coming from a massive Battletoads fan.

Just another Rare franchise for MS to fuck up. I don't know why they even bought Rare. They obviously had no clear intentions for that studio.

looks cheap

Growing up I always wished that one day I'd be able to play games that looks exactly like cartoons so I approve of this.

When they first announced this game, I was hoping for a multiplayer 3D beat-em up in a similar vein as Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  What we got, instead, was a low budget 2D beat-em up with bad art direction.

Would be nice if there was a video accompanying this thread.

Really?, what purpose would that serve?.

I know you're going to say "it looks nice", and you've clearly made up your mind about the game, but I agree with OP. it looks rather low detail, low effort for something that has been teased to us for years.

I was expecting something a little more "faithful" to the original, not a complete do-over.

Feel the designs go right with how current cartoons look, which I'm fine with and the animation looks fluid so far, tho the 3D turbo tunnel sections need more work.

And as far as cartoons go, I don't know what you are talking about by terrible turtles reboot, at least the current one Rise of TMNT, is amazingly animated.

I just hope this is actually a good game, I never played much beyond the NES game and that was a pretty bad game.

That Altered Beast game on PS2 certainly wasn't AAA or a success by any measure.

Cutting edge in the 90s is very different than cutting edge today. The reason studios make less games now is because AAA games are much more complex and expensive. You have to consider that when you ask for a cutting edge Battletoads game today.

I don't see this as a lesser form, its more like par for the course. Cult following doesn't mean this IP can sell many millions of units per se. Frankly, MS has other IPs that more people would like to see revived.

If Battletoads were to get a AAA game, in my mind it would be a project similar to God of War, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, etc. That's what a modern AAA beat em' up looks like to me these days. That would be interesting, but we didn't expect a AAA game nor was that hyped.

Maybe in the future MS will work with Koei Tecmo to create a Battletoads Warriors game! That would be huge among the Battletoads fans in Japan...

Frankly, I want Battletoads to get every type of game. Classic 2D beat em up, AAA game, Dynasty Warriors clone, a VR game, a kart racer, a party game, maybe an open world Grand Theft Battletoads and lastly they can make the World of Battletoads online MMO! I mean this IP is so huge and has so much potential, MS is just wasting it! Battletoads has the potential to be a Mario Bros killer!
