PS4 Super Slim and PS4 Pro Slim?

Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Super Slim and PS4 Pro Slim?

Will we get PS4 Super Slim and/or PS4 Pro Slim?

PS4 Super Slim and PS4 Pro Slim 17 35.42%

only PS4 Super Slim 4 8.33%

only PS4 Pro Slim 7 14.58%

no new hardware until PS5 20 41.67%

Total:48

PS5 doesn't hit the stores in 2019 obviously. Nintendo Switch gets more and more momentum, so the question is: how does Sony compensate dropping sales of PS4 and PS4 Pro? Will we see a final and cheaper hardware revision this year (PS4 Super Slim and/or PS4 Pro Slim)? We saw the PS3 Super Slim about one year before PS4 launch. Or will Sony only cut the price of existing hardware? Discuss.

Yes, I see no reason why we wouldn't get a a super slim and a pro slim. The die shrink (7 nm) should be close if not already there for it to be possible.

I think a 7nm PS4 would be awesome.
If it allows them to make them slightly cheaper bring it on, the sooner the better.

Why should the regular PS4 be phased out?

It only represents ~75% of sales, clearly it's time to discontinue it.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

If the PS5 really is due out next year (which is highly likely), then I'd be inclined to say we won't see anything, especially in light of similar things on the PS3. The PS3 Super Slim had no real impact on PS3 sales, so I don't see Sony coming out with a PS4/Pro Super Slim unless it would make the hardware more profitable over the remainder of the PS4's lifespan. And we've never seen a price cut this late in a system's life, with the latest being in Year 5; the PS3 got a $50 price cut in Sept. 2012, and while it did have a stimulative effect, it was short-lived. As with a hypothetical Super Slim, I don't see Sony issuing a price cut unless they think it'll make the PS4 more profitable over the remainder of its life, because the benefits to sales volume provided by late-life price drops aren't that great.

It's probably even higher than that now. PS4 Pro represented 20-25% of sales when it first came out, but I think it might have dropped off since then.

I'm assuming melbye naively assumes that if Sony stopped selling the PS4 then developers would only have to develop with the PS4 Pro in mind, and not be forced to still support the regular PS4 at all.

One or the other, not both. They aren't going to try introduce 2 new skus now

I'm actually starting to think we won't see any more PS4 revisions. I was 100% sure we would see 7nm PS4 Super Slim and a PS4 Pro Slim, but since Sony has not added any new Firmware features since FW4.50 on 3/9/2017, it is looking unlikely that any major PS4 support will show up in the future.

As far as we know right now, "The 6.50 update does not include any new major consumer-facing features."

I'm guessing PS5 is the focus now, and they are going to take a major leap away from the PS4 OS and the current PlayStation Network Structure. The way things look to me, Sony are going to want to get people moved from PS4 to PS5 ASAP. So, now I don't think we will see PS4 Super Slim and PS4 Pro Slim, as I'm guessing Sony does not want to increase or maintain demand for the system.

Perhaps they have a multi-tier set up in place for PS5, that will target both the low end and high end, like we are hearing rumored for XB4. That would eliminate the need to keep PS4 around once PS5 arrives, and with full B/C and a $300 PS5 version on the market, they don't even need PS4's on shelves for people to replace broken systems as PS5 would do that + more at the same or cheaper.

Now that I have said this though, look for an announcements for both PS4 revisions any day.
