I dont see a normal xbox one and a one x as the same console either

This is where you have to be careful about generational and console delineations.  Again, power is not the criterion.  The Xbox One X doesn't differentiate itself enough from the standard model to gain acceptance as a separate and independent console.

Admittedly, these rules aren't written in stone and their application is largely centered around industry consensus. With that in mind, the industry still qualifies the One and One X as the same console....just different models.

Which funny since the gap between the normal and the X will be bigger when comparing the gap from the X with the next generation ( most likely )

Funny indeed and likely a first for any mid-gen model upgrade against the original model and next gen successor.   Interesting times.

The problem is Microsoft did (IMO) a huge mistake by releasing an almost 6 times more powerful hardware than its base model and market it as the same console. From a 900p console which can barely hold up 30 fps to a 4k-60fps console there is a huge gap, even a generation. And they prevent them from potential huge sales by naming it after a non-failure-but-non-successful-either brand.

Sony didn't do that by releasing a half-baked 2k-30fps Pro version which can mostly be useful to play games on "performance mode". So no real generation gap for the PS4.

Great to see this game doing great in Europe and Japan also.

Now that bears the question: What was the fastest-selling console Nintendo game before? And how much did it sell?

Seems that some Nintendo handheld game did better there, though, otherwise they probably wouldn't have specified "console game"

And thus, Tbone's 25 million becomes reality.

Well this is pretty insane... the best weeks of December are still not over.
Switch will sell like crazy. I was never expecting the Switch to beat 3DS + Wii U but it looks like Nintendo can pull that off.

And 2019 looking so good too, NSMBU in January while last year we only had like kirby in MARCH.

It will explode next year. With a price cut and a revision it could do Wii/DS numbers

SUPERBBBBBBBB!!!!!

I think people often forget that generations are entirely arbitrary categorizations used in the industry to divide the history of console sales and competition into periods dominated by sets of hardware that were considered contemparies of one another and were each other's principle competition.  The Switch makes the most sense as a Gen 8 platform.  Yes, that means Nintendo had 2.  Doesn't really matter.  Barring miraculous legs or a surprise early launch for gen 9, the Switch will garner the majority of its sales in competition with the PS4 and Xbone.  And it will do so over a period of 3 years or more.  Rolling it into gen 9 would make no sense.

Absolutely correct.  And having 2 consoles in the same generation is not unprecedented.  Magnavox had 2 consoles in the first generation, Atari had 2 in the second generation, Sega and Atari both had 2 in the 3rd generation and SNK had 2 in the fourth generation.  It's less common now but it's certainly not something unique to Nintendo this generation.

Too many people think power determines their inclusion into a generation but nobody in the industry itself has ever used that criterion.

None of what you two guys said matters.

Nintendo issued a press release based on NPD data, and NPD has classified Switch as a current generation home console. Nintendo isn't going to bother to contest that classification, they just take it and build their PR from there.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Wow, these are insane sales! Definitely well deserved, I can see it becoming one of the highest selling exclusive (non Pokemon) games of all time
