When they cant bother sticking to the original story or characters... thats when you know the show it going to be crap.

I agree, the show just lost any chance of being good in my opinion.

Yeah, I know Henry's a fan and loves Witcher - he seems like a nice guy, I just don't think he's a good fit, either when it comes to looks or his acting skills - well, hopefully, at least makeup can do the trick with former...

Yeah, I don't think we have to worry too much about the appearance at least, Hollywood make-up artists can do wonderful things. A skilled photoshopper made a mock-up of what Henry could look like once he is in make-up:

Acting is a definite concern though, his reception among DC fans hasn't been that great. Admittedly though, I've never seen him act in anything personally, as I'm not a DC fan and haven't seen any of his other movies yet. I hear he was in the latest Mission Impossible, I will probably rent that when it releases, so that will probably be my first exposure to him. Hopefully he doesn't disappoint me.

While indeed very skilled PS, what bothers me is that Henry has so undistinctive looking face of your average frat guy that even under that makeup he doesn't feel like Geralt at all - well at least not to me. That's why I mentioned that skilled makeup could possibly fix that, making him...well, uglier.

As for acting...quite average.

IMO, real pitty they couldn't get Mads or Nikolaj.

Terrible idea and bastardization of the source material. I will never support any adaptation that treats its source material with disdain instead of actual respect. If they feel like the cast isn't "diverse enough" (which I find silly) then create some new characters, don't bastardize already existing ones. This is quite troubling, after reading the news about Henry Cavill I was excited about the adaptation but this is a deal breaker unless the casting people reconsider.

The Witcher games and books are sexist that they decided to counter-balance it with some positivity for once on the Netflix side of things

Nicely done

What the hell are you talking about?. Even if the books are sexist, how is this decision "positive" in any way shape or form?.

I hope that was a joke and it flew over my head.

I really don't see a big deal here. The books are set in a fictional world where history of racial migration doesn't have to mirror ours. Why does it bother people so much or "make no sense" for a character's race to be different? It's a different medium so having a new twist on an existing property is more entertaining than seeing the same old thing.

On the opposite spectrum, we have a bunch of people who went crazy over The Ghost in the Shell live action move casting Scarlet Johansson as the main character. I agree that there aren't many lead roles for minorities so including a diverse cast isn't a bad thing. However, I don't believe this was a case of white washing. News flash, the character in the anime has BLUE eyes. When do you see Asians with blue eyes? Of course, you can chalk that up to the shell having blue eyes, but then again, if you went with that reasoning, you could apply that logic to her entire shell's Caucasian appearance. Her ghost may have been Asian, but her shell was off the shelf white (just like the movie). Makes sense.

I'm black and love any representation I can get in the fantasy genre but can I just get an established black character instead? I would love to see an original black witcher or an original black sorceress. Hell if you want you can write them as the "odd man out" and play around with that.

You need to Read Steven Erickson's - Malazan Book of the Fallen.
Its High Fantasy, and features tons of kickass characters (alot of them black).

HBO need to get their hands on that IP, and start makeing that a new tv series, like Game of Throne's was once.

and a handfull of others, but the above ones are really kickass and play key roles.

But its nice watching people wince at the current trend of trying to make casts more diverse because decades hollywood has been white washing black, asian and poc characters even down to the constant casting of storm as a caramel skinned woman.

from this:

to this:

Close enough I guess.

Though I think casting a character thats supposed to be really pale with almost white blonde hair, as a black/asian would be a worse offense.
Token minorty roles just because.... even if they have to change characters seems wrong though.

I mean atleast they didnt have a white person play Storm, that is what this is akin too.

The issue I find with most arguments as to why they would change it, is why does it negative effect you? Saying "why not just leave the character as white", is virtually the same as "what's the harm in making her a person of color". I see this day after day and it can make the video game community really toxic. I think the biggest factor is white people are represented 10 to 1 in cinema and television and studies show other demographics can gain more confidence, security, happiness when someone that represents them is in a film or television project. I'm not saying that it can't get out of hand, in the case of when it has no logical place. But it seems to me like people are making a mountain out of a moll hill.

In case you were wondering, BAME stands for Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic in the UK.

Why do SJW's have to ruin everything with this forced diversity nonsense? There is literally no reason for Ciri to be anything other than White, she is the daughter of Emhyr var Emreis, who is shown to be white, and through her mother, Pavetta Fionna Elen, she is a 3rd generation descendant of Skellige blood, Skelligens being based on real life Scandinavians.

Why does there need to be a racially diverse main cast in everything, even in series where it doesn't make sense? Can't they just have a few side characters who are minorities? Why is that not good enough, when there are plenty of other series with diverse main casts?

So basically - why cant they be off to the side, hidden where I don't need to see or acknowledge them?

I think you've answered your own question.

BINGO!

Do the books state that she is white?

Most likely she is. They mainly emphasize her "ashen-grey" hair. Everyone is white except a few but mainly all main characters are white.

Well, if it is not specified, I see no problem.  A black or Brown girl can have ashen gray hair just as well as a white chick.

i see no problem with this
