You're essentially equating bigger screens, HD and other technical aspects with movies being better. These are all superfluous. It makes me think your some kind of Marvel fan that cares CGI and spectacle more than actual script and acting. Tell me that Jurassic world is better than JP? New alien better than original? There's virtually no remakes I can think of that approach the originals in quality, and it all comes down to script, pacing and acting.

Couldn't agree more about movies, I watch far less nowadays. However TV shows have gotten much better, my current favorite is The Expanse and I also just started watching West world. CGI is helping a lot with immersion there. New Battlestar Galactica was also a lot better than the original.

Movies are just ugh. I still have to watch the Blade runner remake, it's probably very pretty yet I just don't feel like watching it. The original is so good in pacing and atmosphere. Movies nowadays are less immersive to me as they are so over the top with impossible stunts and cgi it's just so unbelievable. Can't wait to see the next Tarantino movie though.

TV has gotten better, but its not because of technology, its because the scripts have become far better. In the end thats what makes or breaks movies.

Depends where you draw the line.

Counting every game with a MetaScore of 85% or better, we get over 100 games the last years (many of them small indie games).

Counting every game with a MetaScore of 90% or better, we got 30 - 40 games in the early 2000's and only 15 - 20 games since 2014:

And the public at large either didn't notice or didn't care.

Okay, So we'll wipe Neir, Nioh, Ori, Yakuza 0, Persona 5, Hellblade and Xcom 2 off of the list also, so.

Except those are all high profile titles that did well.

Blade Runner isn't a remake, but for me it also didn't best the original.  The acting is a little better though.

In fairness, that's not saying much, considering how young video games were as a medium.

You shut up 'cause you almost exploded of joy with LoD, Shenmue and Halo back in the day.

Haha ya, I did. And if I was that young right now, playing some of the current games coming out, I'd exploding with just as much joy for those. It's pretty hard to get excited about anything as much as I did in my early teens.

Don't know if you realize this, but most people don't go online to rate everything they watch. Now, I don't know exactly how many movies I've seen in my life, but I grew up with a father who bought literally every movie that touched shelves for the better part of a decade, so by the time I was 12 or so we had well over a thousand different movies around the house. I watched a great many of them, and a great many since. Plenty in any case, and I've never felt bothered to go rate any of them.

The book comparison is ridiculous, which you well know. It's equally ridiculous to suggest that technical advancements, and spectacle aren't hugely important for movies. It's a visual medium. The experience of seeing a movie today is NOTHING like seeing a movie decades ago, and that's a damn good thing. Fortunately for us, most of the classics have been remastered as best as possible.

Maybe those things are superfluous to you, but they're definitely not to most people. Movie going is, and always has been, an experience. All those things you call superfluous matter.

You seem to be really caught up on Marvel movies, and Jurassic World. This is the second time you've mentioned them already. Tell me, is there a reason you don't want to talk any recent quality movies like Dunkirk, Three Billboards, Get Out, etc? No, please tell me about how Hollywood cashing in on some remakes of classic movies aren't as good the original. That's weird. People usually never think the originals of anything are better than the lazy offspring they eventually spawn at some point down the line. But by all means, lets use those, and other formulaic blockbusters, to denigrate todays movie makers as a whole. And while we're at it, lets talk down at anybody who might dare enjoy any of those movies. What simpletons they are. Don't they know how much better Godfather was than anything else ever? Don't let the fact that something like the Lord of the Rings trilogy wasn't even remotely achievable back in your personal so called golden age of movies distract you from the how incredibly right you're obviously not

I was thinking about this recently actually, and what period I considered to be the golden age was from the 4th to 6th gen. 4th gen was home to many excellent games that are still loved today, and companies like Square and Capcom were seen as top companies, which any game with their logos on them was almost always guaranteed excellence. 5th and 6th gen also had many excellent and loved games from both old and new faces along the the birth of many new interesting IPs.

7th gen however was then that line of excellence sort of fell off and felt like a sort of reset for many companies as they tried to make games bigger and bolder than before. Gaming has been getting better once again, but companies like Capcom and Sqaure are still shadows of their former selves.

Off topic, I apologize.

This reminded me of an elderly gentleman (roughly 80 years old) I met a few years ago.  He had a stroke, and his doctor recommended video games as part of his rehab.  The thinking was that it would help improve his motor skills.  Fast forward a couple years, and the dude has an ultra-wide beast gaming PC setup, and spends half of his life playing Call of Duty and Battlefield.  I thought it was a pretty cool story.

I think gaming had a bit of a dull period between 2008 and 2014, but now things seem to be picking up again. (Which is not to say nothing good came out in that period) this generation is shaping up to be a vast improvement over the last one if you ask me, which is weird considering how weak things started in 2014

I make game analyses on youtube:

No.

Japanese companies are the most consistent. I mean that in a bad way.

Golden age has to be the 6th gen still. PS2/GBA was a monster combo, but 1990 - 2006, any frame in there I would except as golden age.
