i remember the time where square enix was still called Squaresoft, before they teamed up with enix. in this time the pruduced one jrpg hit after other...remember games like crono trigger, secret of mana, final fantasy, vagrant story, xenogears, crono cross, dragon quest, threads of fate, parasite eve, radiata stories, valkyrie profile, grandia, kingdom hearts, star ocean...as jrpg lover it wasn't even necessary to wait for a review (it's my opinion), and you knew already you would buy a game what you will enjoy, because it's from SQAURE ENIX, but then with the the generation of ps3/xbox this changed...something has gone wrong, but why?

The bolded were not published by Squaresoft.

Anyway, Square-Enix is more focused on making technically impressive cinematic experiences than fun games, but failed at doing even that because their proprietary engines were failures (until recently.) Excepting the Enix-side of things. Dragon Quest has retained its quality, but it is Dragon Quest after-all, that is a safety net.

Also I think Square let a lot of their talent leave the company to start their own stuff.

you're right, that important stuff left square enix could really be a big reason, even godfather of final fantasy himself

Ah? But this is a great FF.

lol wut?

I see it to easily be superior to any mainline FF effort that came after it. It has the gameplay, it has the soundtrack, it has the graphics. Yuna is a strong personality and the story is very engaging.

I've not played FFXV yet, but I can't imagine that it'll be better than FFX-2.

1.) I see. So there's a cooldown system too. I like the sound of the level up you get from food as well, and the hidden stats from clothes and how to access them. But can you just look up the hidden stats online, or are they not only hidden but actually inaccessible until you lvl up the store?
And when you say next day in real time, is that referring to the game checking an internal clock like in Pokemon, or the next day in the story, like in Persona when you go to bed?

3.) The chapter select feature is very nice. This game also has multiple endings. It's hard to explain without spoiling anything but there is one particular big surprise because of this system.

There is one ending for each letter in the alphabet. Endings A - E are the real genuine ones, while F - Z are joke premature endings.
To access endings A - E, you play through the game with different characters. Route B is mainly a repeat of Route A's story seen from the perspective of a different character. But C - E are not. Without spoiling anything, it is mandatory to go through them all in order to experience the full story. It's not just "a bit of extra story" like in pretty much any other game with different routes. Nier: Automata (with the exception of Route B) handles this differently.

Anyway, good to hear you will be playing the game. Though I wasn't saying anything about how great this game is. Because it really is. Someone I talked to earlier on the forum called it semi-revolutionary. (And a lot of reviewers have said similar things, stressing how important Nier: Automata is to the videogame medium.)
I did however do that in another post. I'll copy and paste it here because it relates to this topic at hand. Square Enix do still make great games, and Nier: Automata is one of them.
Platinum Games designed the combat mainly, but Square Enix's Yoko Taro and c.o. are responsible for much of the rest.

Here's a copy of my other post:

-snip-

I feel like there's a good chance you'll get to at least Persona 5 and Monster Hunter: World eventually because of the hype and how they are presented. So I'd suggest you play Nier: Automata first. It's a game no videogame fan should miss. Especially if you like rpgs.

1) I'm sure you could check the stats online, but I haven't so far. Clothes have immediate stat effects like Def+3 for example, but also special abilities. One specific sweatshirt for example stops your partner from getting mad at you for running from battles. Because if you do, your partner will get angry and the so called sync rate between you two gets a little bit lower. Now if you visit a shop and tap the items on display, the shopkeeper might notice you browsing his stuff and tell you about the ability. The higher the shop level, which is increased by continuous purchases, the higher the likeliness of getting to know the abilities. I think, but I might need to check that, the likeliness is also dependent of the clothes your wearing at the moment. Because the game features a bunch of virtual clothing brands and if your clothes match the shop, the keeper may dig your style and grant you access to more abilites. Happened to me a couple of times but I didn't pay enough attention.

Real time like in Pokemon, yes. It checks the internal clock.

3) Now I'm even more excited about Nier: Automata, thanks. But i'm not sure whether I grab P5 or MHW as well because so far I never played any game in their respective series. But I'm not going to rule it out, we will see.

Another reason is that they tried more and more to appeal to the western market and for me if felt like the quality suffered greatly by that.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)
