Who cares if the people say the series is dead.
It's not like that hurt fallout 4 sales in the slightest.

On topic, it should be announced a around 6 months before.
A lot of publishers are transitioning to a shorter turnaround.including Ubisoft Bethesda and Nintendo.

Sony and Square Enix, and MS, have to step their game up on this matter.

There. Fixed that for ya.

@ OP

Personally, I don't care, as long as the game comes out. Though, 4 years is definitely pushing it. I actually do like the 2-3 years thing, though, as I like following the progress of a game. Gets me more hyped for it. Of course, I'm not going to complain about it only being 1 year after the announcement.

Yeah, MS does that too.

(At least they don't do it intentionally though, their games always have development troubles that delays the game further, but I digress, and your point still stands)

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I don't think it matters much.

Ignoring extremes in both directions ofcourse. And by extreme I mean like Duke Nukem Forever.

6 months prior to release always makes me happy, but some titles do require regular updates to assure people it's happening (KH3, for example).

There is no "best time" for a game announcement. Some people want to have informations far in advance, others prefer announcements close to release.

Port announcements should be as early as possible from a customers standpoint to prevent settling for the "wrong version" of a game. Publishers love to hide these informations as long as possible, hoping for "double dippers" and due to NDAs with Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo.

Late announcements without leaks/rumours are hard to realize nowadays because almost every developer has its fanbase. "Developer X just released game Y... what are they working on now?" - "Let's collect every snippet of information we can find on blogs / Facebook / Twitter / Xing... accounts of every person (programmers, designers, artists, voice actors...) working on their games!"

Couple factors come into play for that question. Mostly it depends on the hype or overall recognition of the games title.

If it's a game no ones heard of... it might be in the best interest to keep things sealed until the last minute.

Now if it's a title that gamers are aware of...I think it's best to announce the games development as soon as it's given the producers green light.

It not only keeps fans anticipation but also allows the opportunity to receive fan feedback...something developers and producers take major advantage of.

No more than 2 years and that's pushing it for me. 1 year is perfect.

6-12 Months

I'm sick and tired of seeing games 2-3 or even more before the release

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

3-6 months.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

Don’t Nintendo still announce several of their games well in advance?
