OP's premise is already on shaky grounds if we're only considering Pokemon games to begin with ...
There's other franchises such as Minecraft, GTA, Super Mario, Wii and god forbid even annualized COD series managed to be competitive with Pokemon ...

It does change what you said as all the Pokemon franchise needs is a little growth to become huge, and growth between R/S and D/P shows that Pokemon is capable of continuing to grow.
I don't necessarily agree with OP anyway, but that's just the facts of the matter.
