Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Odyssey totally burried 3D World

Two very different things.

I see 3D Land/3D World as taking the sensibilities of 2D Mario games and translating into a isometric platformer.

Odyssey is not that. You go to each for a different experience.

This is why New Super Mario Bros. has been very successful. Its not that its better than Mario 64 or Galaxy per se, but people want that type of game.

3D world looks like a generic mario game. It was really vanilla. Very good in many parts but lacks any sort of magic 64, sunshine and galaxies have. Odyssey on the other hand...

Also I get that a lot of people loved 3D World, it's a good game and from a pure platforming perspective, definitely one of the best if not the best Mario game ever. That beong said there is a reason why it got hate, including from myself, and it's not hate on the game itself, just the fact that a year earlier Nintendo made not one but TWO 2D Mario games (and 3D Land the year before). It just felt like it was a direction that Mario was headed at. Moreover many things stand out that didn't make sense:

- Why call it 3D World when 3D Land was called that purely for the 3D (another in a list of Wii U branding issues)

- 2D Mario games were back to provide the more linear Mario games. 3D World felt like a continuation not an extension of that series.

- There was no theme for this 3D Mario game, something that has been present since Sunshine. This made it feel like an incoherent world and more like a collection of mini worlds

You're still upset over 3D World even after getting a "real" 3D Mario like you wanted? Jeez just let it go man! Then again, I'd probably also make a thread bashing Sticker Star/Color Splash if we were to get a great Paper Mario game again.

I simply don't understand why people trashes 3d world. I really liked it, and it had amazing production values, the music was outstanding and the graphics are simply beautiful. It's not just one OR the other, I'm so glad that Nintendo makes so many types of games, and that they keep experimenting with their sagas, making different games with one ip and all of them so enjoyable! Hope next Mario game is a 3d world sequel, and then an Oddysey sequel

3D world is amazing so is Odyssey but I cant say which I like better as I loved the multiplayer of 3d world and being able to play with my kids

I've yet to play Odyssey but 3D World was extremely fun. Played it with 3 other friends and had a blast. Definitely a magical experience that Odyssey can't have.

3DWorld was an awesome game dude, the fact that oddissey is better doesn't change that

Mainly because it caused Mario 3D to disappear during 7 years.

It wouldn't have been a problem if it was just a side game. But it was presented as a main game.

Bullshit, in the last 7 years 3D mario sold +16M copies with 2 games (3DLand and 3DWorld), that's not too far from the 18m that Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 sold.

In Lucas's mind, 3DLand and 3DWorld are not 3D Mario games so 3D Mario games disappeared from 7 years according to him. It doesn't make any sense but there you have it.

Signature goes here!

Mario 3D World was embarrassing, and pretty much summed up the Wii U.

The Wii U had some great games no doubt (Breath of the Wild, Yoshi's Wooly World, Bayonetta 2) but overall it was soooo underwhelming. And Mario 3D World is an example of that.

First of all, they thought "Well 3D Land was a success! So 3D World will be as well!" They had no clue why 3D Land worked so well (IT'S MOBILE!). Second of all, multiplayer isn't wanted in a 3D Mario title! It didn't even have online play anyway.

I remember being hyped for the first HD 3D Mario, hoping for something with Super Mario Galaxy's art style. I was hoping for the Super Mario 64 successor. When the original trailer came out I bursted out laughing. I couldn't even tell if it was real or not. I felt I was being pranked.

Thank goodness Nintendo woke up and we got Odyssey. It does have its issues (it's pretty empty sometimes) but to me it's the true successor to 64/Galaxy.

TBH I think Mario 3D World would have been OK as the SECOND 3D Mario game on the system. Say, for example, was released in 2015 as celebration for 30 years of Super Mario Bros. If a game like Odyssey were released in 2013, then Mario 3D World came out LATER I think the reception would have been better.

But seriously let's never do that again plz.
