Mario 3D World was embarrassing, and pretty much summed up the Wii U.

The Wii U had some great games no doubt (Breath of the Wild, Yoshi's Wooly World, Bayonetta 2) but overall it was soooo underwhelming. And Mario 3D World is an example of that.

First of all, they thought "Well 3D Land was a success! So 3D World will be as well!" They had no clue why 3D Land worked so well (IT'S MOBILE!). Second of all, multiplayer isn't wanted in a 3D Mario title! It didn't even have online play anyway.

I remember being hyped for the first HD 3D Mario, hoping for something with Super Mario Galaxy's art style. I was hoping for the Super Mario 64 successor. When the original trailer came out I bursted out laughing. I couldn't even tell if it was real or not. I felt I was being pranked.

Thank goodness Nintendo woke up and we got Odyssey. It does have its issues (it's pretty empty sometimes) but to me it's the true successor to 64/Galaxy.

TBH I think Mario 3D World would have been OK as the SECOND 3D Mario game on the system. Say, for example, was released in 2015 as celebration for 30 years of Super Mario Bros. If a game like Odyssey were released in 2013, then Mario 3D World came out LATER I think the reception would have been better.

But seriously let's never do that again plz.
