3D world looks like a generic mario game. It was really vanilla. Very good in many parts but lacks any sort of magic 64, sunshine and galaxies have. Odyssey on the other hand...
Also I get that a lot of people loved 3D World, it's a good game and from a pure platforming perspective, definitely one of the best if not the best Mario game ever. That beong said there is a reason why it got hate, including from myself, and it's not hate on the game itself, just the fact that a year earlier Nintendo made not one but TWO 2D Mario games (and 3D Land the year before). It just felt like it was a direction that Mario was headed at. Moreover many things stand out that didn't make sense:
- Why call it 3D World when 3D Land was called that purely for the 3D (another in a list of Wii U branding issues)
- 2D Mario games were back to provide the more linear Mario games. 3D World felt like a continuation not an extension of that series.
- There was no theme for this 3D Mario game, something that has been present since Sunshine. This made it feel like an incoherent world and more like a collection of mini worlds
