Forums - Gaming Discussion - More than half of Destiny 2's console sales were digital downloads

"We mentioned last year that our historical digital mix was about 20 to 25 per cent for Call of Duty and more in the 30 to 40 per cent range for Destiny and Overwatch on console," fellow Activision boss Spencer Neumann continued, adding more colour. "Historically, we've been seeing that digital mix increase at about five points a year. With Destiny 2 digital at over 50 per cent console sell-through so far, we believe we're seeing some acceleration in that digital shift."

50% digital? That's crazy!

So glad that Japan is resisting digital though

I think the Japanese have embraced digital games in a big way, their phones.

Also, they have a significant used games culture from my understanding. Which is probably why Japanese games generally have no legs.

Well I meant console games, screw phones!

And yeah, a huge used game culture. But that's a good thing. Cheap games for everyone

Cheap games is good, but this obviously impacts the developers. Encourages them to cater to the west.

Not impressive when the digital attach rate is 99% on PC

People still buy physical games? Anyway that's great news. I'm so glad the game was successful.

Glad to see digital picking up. So much added value, and so many more possibities. Hope to see this trend continue. Moving to physical free devices will allow for many new form factors. Hope we can reach a point by the end of this gen where we can have at least the option of a next gen console without any physical media port.

I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing games hit digital weeks in advance of physical like we see with Movies.

Considering the physical disk of Vanilla Destiny held value worse than a yearly sports title, the hardcore fans buying digital does not surprise me one bit.

Looks like you were right and I was wrong ! Thanks for correcting me

Not surprising seeing as it's an online only game. No trade-in value and not something you can go back in play once they shut the servers down. Online only game are generally the ones I buy digital also.

In 2-5 years singleplayer games will reach 50% and these service games like destiny will be above 70% digital.
