Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Xenoblade Chronicles Series Thread: Definitive Edition (All Spoilers in Tags)

I played Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii at the UK launch. I softmodded my Wii to play an import version of Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower. I later bought the US versions of those games. Still have them. PLayed Xenoblade a few times over. After playing Xenoblade 2. I enjoyed that game more overall. OST wise I can go either way on which is better. As a game which I had the most fun with, Xenoblade 2 but some of that is I knew what to expect playing previous games. I did like the characters more in XC2. I liked the combat more. I won't claim one is better but I know I enjoyed 2 more.

Torna gets slept on. It was amazing. Short and sweet but wow did it have an impact.

I dunno. For me the story of Xenoblade 2 just never clicked, and I was really invested in XC1.

I feel I should emphasize that do I like Xenoblade 2 and consider it a good game, in spite of some of the issues I have with it.

It's an 8/10 for me, but Xenoblade 1 is a 9.5/10 and one of my top 10 games of the last decade.

Xenoblade Chronicles: The most balanced, very good at everything; best story. Slightly outdated on some areas

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Best world and mobility mechanics, but lacking main story and confusing Soul Voices mechanic

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Best combat, but uneven story and field abilities progression is stupid

Character development in XBC2 is way above the other games tbh each character has a deep back story even the characters who are supposed to be henchmen have a back story this is even further highlighted by the Torna dlc, various non story blades themselves even have back stories. XBC1 is easier for people to follow because it's a traditional way a story plays out XBC2 however is a collection of individual stories that overlap and come together during an overarching issue, the result is that the latter takes more time to take hold it's not until chapter 3 when the game really begins.

Only reason I think the original edges it in story is mainly because it doesn't take as long to get going and is paced slightly better otherwise I'd say the games are even in that regard.

Any villain in XC2 has their own back story and reasons, but in XC1, Lothiria didn't have any, and Mumkhar, his reason is silly as hell with no depth, then Shulk even tried to forgive him for all the people he did kill and turned them into mechon, ok. Then, look at Reyn, outside being Shulk best friend, he is basically almost nonexistence unless it involved Sharla. Just like Reyn, Sharla is irrelevant to the main story unless it is related to Juju or Gadolt. Music, agree with you, totally based on taste.

Spoiler!
Lorithia did have reason, she wanted to keep the High Entia bloodline clean, she was racially motivated. Mumkhar may not have had a teary backstory. but he doesn't need one, he's just an enjoyably hateable example of what happens when a selfish person is given great power.`

Plus the characters in XBC2 were sometimes cringey and annoying to a degree that none of XBC1's character ever are.

Then she just needs to finish Melia alone, she had a plenty of times to kill Melia when she wasn't in Shulk's group yet. Mumkhar is just a bad guy for the sake of it.

"cringey and annoying" but XC2 also has a lot of touching moments for many villains, even the most hated one or the final boss, unlike Zanza - a completely a***ole. I could feed bad and sympathy (more or less) for any XC2 villain, but not XC1, outside Egil and perhaps Dickson for a bit, all are tra** to me.

I don't know how to quote multiple posts, but thanks for your answers guys! I'll definitely give the game a try.

You have to click on the multi-quote  button just beside the quote button to your right.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, good sir! I've only been here since 2007, there was no way I could've noticed that button on my own lol!

Spoiler!

She does try to kill Melia alone, Shulk and co show up to save her, there's a whole boss fight around this.

Zanza may not be sympathetic, but ultimately, a villain does not necessarily need to be. He's ultimately acting out of self-preservation combined with his tendency to see the inhabitants of this new universe like ants in a jar due to him being its creator.

In both games, a lot of it ultimately boils down to how people deal with being given great power; whether they allow themselves to be corrupted by it, or whether they try and use it constructively.

I just find XBC1's characters to be more charming and likable, and they never made me cringe or roll my eyes the way XBC2's sometimes did. (Looking at you Tora/Zeke)
