Forums - Gaming Discussion - How Blizzard ruined gaming, now every game has lootboxes

TruckOSaurus said:

Overwatch's loot boxes are not that bad. Not ideal but it's only skins and other non-gameplay affecting items. Like others have said, it was used way before Overwatch and it was used in way worst manners than in Overwatch. The only reason you single out Blizzard is because you're on a personal vendetta against them.

Hahahahaha

Don't give them too much credit. It all started way before Overwatch. You could blame Valve for it but they just ripped it off from trading card games. So actually it's Nintendo's fault.

Yeah...if we ignore decades of collectible cards followed by Magic the Gathering that started shitty CCG practices when it comes to gaming.

Sad thing is, Richard Garfield, a guy who made MTG, is quite decent designer outside of CCGs (RoboRally and King of Tokyo are quite often to be found on Top something boardgame lists).

What do you even do with those cards that come in packs?  You make a lineup like fantasy football (NFL) and play other people with their cards?  Just seems lame but I can see the addiction in openning digital cards.  To me though digital cards are pretty stupid.  It isn't like real baseball, football, basketball, etc cards at all.

If done right there's nothing wrong with them. Blame Mobile games. That's where the industry is seeing the profits.

From my understanding those cards are just representing the players you get. Once you have a player you can put them on your own team which you can use in certain modes. Or you can sell the player to get more funds.

Yet aren't these players available in the career, season, and exhibition modes?  So they made a few more modes just to exploit these digital cards?

According to OP it does not matter who started it, only who popularized it. Nintendo is popular, so it must be them.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I thought it was Mass Effect 3 that started it? Well first instances where I saw it in a game anyway.

But looking at this thread, I just realised the way that modern loot boxes in game is no different to stickers for World Cup football sticker collection. There's always 1 or 2 that are hard to come by but the kids spend their pocket money on a pack to try and get it.

The industry won't change as long as people keep buying it and honestly, alot of youtubers and alike are to blame. They sometimes drop more on them than they paid for the original game because they make a lot to do it in a video.

Hmm, pie.

People forget, but FIFA has had it for a long time. Instead of boxes it's boosters in ultimate team.

Anyways, people are finally realizing they are beeing scammed. This could be reverted if Shadow of war were to flop massively. AKA if we all boycotted it.
The thing is, there must be point where the consumer needs to send a clear NO message with their wallets. If it doesn't happen greed will keep pushing.

For everybody pointing to Fifa: It's limited to a mode in the game. You can perfectly enjoy Fifa without spending any money besides the price of the game. I, for example, never ever play Ultimate Team.

not a single thing from OW's loot boxes effects gameplay. Zero...

If it ruins gaming for you because the guy next to you has a prettier looking Mercy in a game, I think there is some issues going on.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Loot boxes are a nice addition to games.
