Forums - Gaming Discussion - Octopath Traveler is how you do a HD 2D game

I honestly feel 2D games done so realistically look weird. In 8 and 16-Bit games, the images and scenes we're seeing are so far removed from reality and it works because let's face it... 2D ISN'T realistic. We don't live in a 2D world. So when I see a realistic looking 2D world it actually makes said world LESS immersive for me.

I prefer 2D to be in 8 and 16-bit... or something flat and cartoon-like etc.

100% agreed.  Once you get much higher than 640x480 resolution for 2D sprite-based games, I start liking how it looks less and less.

Anyways, Octopath looks bloody fantastic.  Day 1 purchase for me.

Looks amazing. Downloaded the demo this morning. Can't wait to go out to my car on lunch break at work today and start playing it.

Seems silly calling it 2D but cool I guess.

4 ≈ One

I was already exited by the little bit of footage they showed in January, but they didn't say anything about the game anymore since then.

I need to get this back on my most wanted list now.

Dragons Crown is how you do it

This is what I came to say. Vanillaware is much better than Silicon Studio at doing this.

I love how it looks. I wish they remade Final Fantasy 5 and 6 with those graphics.

Game looks amazing. I refused to play the demo since I want to play totally blind. (I have 100% confidence in the Bravely Default team)

I do hope they remake some games in this artstyle. Since when you do a 2D -> 3D remake some of the things do not carry over well since the game's art was made for 2D.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Regarding visuals, after playing the demo the shadow boarders are my only complaint honestly.

I would call the style 3D Dot 16bit, while 3D Dot Game Heroes would be 3D Dot 8Bit

edit: or maybe not as it is a pretty notable difference that the game uses sprites for characters etc, while game heroes is all polygon

Vanillaware doesn't try to look retro though...

So I don't see how the two compare.
