On the bright side, all these vehicular attacks lately are going to accelerate the uptake of self driving vehicles. Can't run people over if your car won't let you.

That could actually help abit. Safety features in cars that prevent them from running over people.

Like cars with camra's that auto-break if they see you about to hit a person.

Whoa, I like the idea, but that would have so many problems.

Imagine a person walking on to a motorway in that scenario.

Or people learning the break distance and simply walking across roads at anytime/point potenially causing a litany of other accidents.

An outside influence that can force stop a tonne of fast moving metal is not nessecarily going to make things safer.

That's not how DDoS'ing works.

I know, but I didn't know how to word it better.

I think the fear around hacking autonomous vehicles is overblown. Commercial AV's aren't driven by any sort of remote network that would allow the kind of scenario you're describing. Maybe you could overload a company's servers but all that would do is stop software updates temporarily. Perhaps you could physically sabotage individual vehicles but how's that any different from now? The worst that could come of most attacks is simply shutting down your car but that's not gonna benefit anyone or be any worse than your average mechanical breakdown. The biggest threat in practice will probably be theft via cloned keyfobs and such but again that's stuff that already exists today and will be less of an issue when there's signifantly lower incentive to own your own car in the first place.

They'll just change the MO and start sending in really fat guys to run into crowds of people.

*sigh* It's getting harder and harder to ignore these threads... it feels like I can't wake up a single day without news like these. Why can't people just mind their own business? All this crap will never make any sense to me... and it feels like it's only getting worse, too.

I was working out when they changed one of the sports channels to CNN. Saw this and was disappointed.

Guess nothing will change though. Those who hate Muslims will continue to hate them. Those against this will simply have to find ways to prevent it in the future.

Unfortunately, it can't be stopped. I have a car and a knife. I'm not a maniac, but in a world with 7.6 billion people, there's bound to be some.

Nothing we do can permanently eradicate these attacks (unless we kill all of humanity)

Also, it's nice to to see this thread not turn into a bashfest or a war. Granted, the toxic users haven't commented yet, but I still feel relieved a bit to see this be an actual discussion

Many luxury vehicles already have this feature (Teslas, for example). They're not perfect, but they haven't been a problem yet and have saved several lives.

Absolutely disgusting!!!

All in all, it's always good to remember that you live on a planet of 7 billion. The news carefully cherrypicks all the absolute worst incidents they can find, on a daily basis - and among 7 billion, they will find SOMETHING. As a whole, though, we live in a wonderful, peaceful, safe era.

true, the media pay minimal attention on happy things if any at all, and focus on the negative ones

on top of that, there are countless atrocities happening everywhere that nobody has and may never learn about

back to the topic, the terrosist is Moroccan so another muslim, the saddest part is that they get what they really want, spread fear and divide people in Europe, give a reason for the far-right to be on the rise...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Most political threads start calm and civil, with people reacting to the topic. But after a while, it either dies or turns into a endless discussion.

Yeah, that is until the DDoS attack comes and they can just do whatever they want with millions of cars at once.

Not going to happen without an involved state actor (and probably not happening even with a state actor), and if there's a state actor involved pulling off stuff like that, in practice it'll mean war and you have bigger things to worry about. There's problems related to self-driving cars, but mass-hijacked cars aren't one.
