Forums - Gaming Discussion - Making Konami great again!

I don't know if I want them to develop a new Suikoden or not. It breaks my heart to say that but I have a feeling they would not do the series justice. I would love to be proven wrong.

Suikoden 3 would be a great game to remaster if they respect all the original style, which was gorgeous. It was a very ambitious game and it perhaps tried a few things before the technology was ready. I loved the game, one of my favorite games ever, but it had some rough spots.

Suikoden 4 could straight-up use a remake.

Konami used to be one of the best developers in the world. Not anymore of course.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Ok, so I see you are asserting that they have never been THE best, which is fair, but they used to be one of the best. One my favorite things about them was "the Konami sound", which is just my way of describing the fairly distinct audio their early games had, and the way they were able milk the NES for it's limited audio capabilties in a way that other devs could not. Or at least couldn't be bothered to. Their library of games and franchises sits comfortably among the all time greats IMO. Plus, I still spam this phrase while gaming online:

Some are annoyed. Some amused. Either way, I'm set. :)

I'm actually working on something about Konami right now. I'm still researching it, but allow me to give some piliminary thoughts.

One of the problems it seems with Konami is that they let their series go to shit. Konami was a premier developer years ago, but outside of Metal Gear, there was nothing they were known for. And while everyone loves Kojima, he was spending too much money on his projects. You can see this because despite having higher revenues in 2015, Konami had better profits the following year, suggesting that MGS5 was far too expensive (for reference, under US GAAP, you expense [amoritize] software when its sold after it meets technical feasible. IIRC, this is the same under international standards).

Konami also seems to have lost a lot of its talent. Obviously, Kojima left, but so did the creator of Castlevania. The company has a bad reputation so it would be difficult to build up more talent. The other issue is do many of these brands still have the recognition to warrant re-releases and remasters? Metal Gear and Castlevania maybe, but probably not Contra.

In Konami's current state, the strategy of pushing mobile games may benefit them. The reason they made more money in 2016 is due to a higher gross margin. The low(er) cost of mobile games may allow them a foot holder to build capital and attract new talent. Current AAA is too risky with how high the cost of development is. In fact, a big reason Konami likely rushed MGS5 was due to poor sales of Ground Zero. Switch development may be a good alternative, as OP suggested, given the lower cost. Nevertheless, I think the company needs to find its footing. I think re-releases and remasters are not a great strategy as they need to find what Konami will be in the future, not what they were 10 years ago.

This hypothetical scenario of course assumes Konami being under new leadership, kinda like the transformation SE went thru the last few years. I think Konami's IPs still have value and a lot of recognition, most of those dont need a big budget tot kickstart them. Bomberman is a budget tier game, it did well on the Switch. A beautiful pixel arty Contra and Gradius would be done by indie studios (and def turn eyes on them, like Sonic Mania).

Konami may not have much inhouse talent, but to be honest, most of the AAA games I suggested is thru to the PlatinumGames collaboration: MGR2 and ZOE3. A 3D Castlevania might be more a Fromsoftware thing, but either studio would be the best they can get and a massive upgrade over the terrible devs they chose last gen. And those MGS1-3 remakes would basically be the same games, except on the fox engine, they seem to have enough talent to make those beautiful cutscenes for the Pachinko game.

The only wild card is Suikoden 6, which I'd suggest should be done by the old devs. I think the market is ripe for a new JRPG like that, it's been more receptive to Japanese games than they've ever been in the past decade. If the game is good it will survive in today's market thanks to word of mouth and social media.

Well premier means #1 or highest, so there can`t really be a few

Only included Sega because people seem to nostalgia goggle over them all the time. I personally think they were at their best during 7th gen, with 8th gen Sega being pretty awesome so far too. But Nintendo are pretty difficult to dispute for gens 3/4. Then Squaresoft & Capcom were brilliant during 5th too.

Honestly, I just wouldn`t ever put Konami among the big Japanese publishers. They only seem to have Metal Gear and PES to me, while the actual big publishers have a lot more big popular IPs than just 2.

From my understanding Capcom and Konami were close to each other in terms of size. Premier most certainly can mean multiple by the way, there's multiple premier restauarants, premier game developers, premier engines(Cry Engine, Frostbite 3.0, Unreal Engine 4). Yes Premier can technically mean "best", but it's usually referring to a standard higher than other companies in an industry. In terms of industry, that is how the term is almost always used.

Capcom had : Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Ghost N' Goblins, Final Fight, Mega Man

Konami had : Adventure Island, Bomberman, Castlevania, Contra, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Suikoden, Zone of the Enders

I think the reason people don't remember Konami as a "premier" Japanese publisher is because eventualy Capcom got franchises like Ace Attorney, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Monster Hunter, and Konami franchises just haven't really made the switch to modern-ness. Castlevania and Metal Gear and Silent Hill are their only franchises that have had popular modern interpretations and even then Metal Gear has stopped production for the most part. We're lucky we got Bomberman. But still yes, Konami used to be one of the premier Japanese publishers back in the day.

Namco Bandai, Sega, and Square enix(though they're more so devs) are big too.

You make all valid points. But if they just keep doing mobile and machines only. Eventually that is what they will all be known for. Just like the kiddy image from Nintendo. It became a negative aspect of the company which persists till this day. it does hamper them in areas. Also, mobile is very volitile. Sooner or later they will run out of everything they can port and milk on there. Then end up like Zynga, where profits get stuck. Since they lost respect towards gamers and others. They don't have the other avenues anymore.

As the years go on. No one will want to give them a try. Like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Especially if Kojima gets a strong footing with another company. Or his team alone. People will never look at them again. In the past it would of been easier. But with Social Media and Youtube personalites like Jim Stering making fun of them every time. The marketing job will be harder and harder.

I agree that Konami shouldn't make only mobile games. They did release Super Bomberman R and they have Metal Gear Survive (whatever that's worth). And I agree that mobile is an awfully volatile market. Most companies would be best served releasing some mobile games alongside their larger projects. Konami's problem is that they let go their last big talent. They can't take on large projects in their current state (given the investment and risk involved with modern game development). Smaller games and mobile games are a good way to rebuild the brand and attract talent.

Something I should have mentioned in my last post because I know it will come up. Konami's biggest division is still games. Here is the segment information for FY2016 (in million yen)

  • Digital Entertainment (video games) - 105,573
  • Health and Fitness - 68,648
  • Gaming and Systems (gambling) - 31,215
  • Amusement (Pachinko/Arcade) - 25,342

Never been a big fan of the MGS franchise so I didn't really care about the situation in the last 2 years. ^^
