Forums - Sony Discussion - Do you think PSVR may get the Virtual Boy or Vita treatment?

And as of several months on market, PSVR only recently passed 1 million. Keep in mind - Virtual Boy sold about 750k in about a years time on market. In its first year - PS Vita sold about 4 million units.

So the truth is... PSVR sales are only just above the league of the Virtual Boy, a VR product that was considered a commercial failure - and below the Vita which Sony eventually had little commercial success and practically abandoned.

So - how is Sony going to energize this platform out of obscurity?

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

They can't do much. All they can hope for is that 3rd party companies take more advantage of it. Bethesda's conference sucked but I can imagine that games like Doom VR, Fallout 4 VR, Skyrim VR, migh recharge interest in VR. Kinda doubt it though.

I don't think so. There is a lot of interest in the tech sector on VR technology. I think they will support it for a long time.

I know it will and been saying it for a while. I been right about VR for 20+ years and people still try and argue with me. No matter how much you argue it VR is still niche it's not the future. It's a tried and true failure to be the future for 30 years. PSVR isn't much different than N64DD,32X,SCD.

Nope, VR is here to stay. Sony is pouring a lot of resources into PSVR, and it goes well beyond the PlayStation division. They want to be a leader in this market, now, and as it grows in to a multi-trillion dollar a year business.

They have stated in the past that if the could reach 10% of the PS4 userbase with PSVR that it would be exceeding expectations. With huge games like Gran Turismo Sport, Ace Combat, Doom, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and much more on the hoizon, and a very nice back catalogue built, PSVR is in a very good position.

As prices fall the adoption rate will increase. VR is something that every single business is diving into. This is going to help grow the medium, drive prices down, and develope a lot of expereince.

PSVR will be a niche product, but it will continue to be very well supported, by SIEWWS, 3rd party game publishers, Movie and Music studios, Automakers, Aerospace, and many more software creators. I think VR will see its first larger market push with PS5 and PSVR2, and by the time PS6 and PSVR3 come out in the late 2020's VR will be as big as smartphones are right now. Thanks to Sony's early investment, they will be a very large player in the space.

PSVR isn't it's own console for a start, so weird comparisons to choose

and no, it's doing fine, and will improve markedly when games like GT and Skyrim VR release and the price goes down. It's a $399 accessory, over 1m already is pretty good

It's obvious you haven't really tried it.

VR is never going away and will just be an exciting edition to an otherwise grown stale gaming market.

I agree on all your points. I don't even know why people are worrying when Sony has sold about each and every one they can produce.

It will never be a mass market thing until the price goes way down. That said a 100,- price drop before Christmas plus a Pro for 350,- could tempt a lot of people to buy one. People continue to be amazed by mine and there is enough software to warrant a sale already. Most people simply don't want to spent all that money on something that will probably be replaced in 2-3 years already.

That said, as someone already said...GTS and Skyrim/Fallout could definitely change that.

I only think one thing is missing still....Sony needs a more sophisticated Move replacement as soon as possible or movement in games will be limited due to the lack of thumb sticks.

PSVR is doing awesome compared to Virtual Boy, it's selling faster at more than twice the price, it has much more support, they can't even produce enough units for it.

It's safe to say this is only the first iteration, PSVR will be a platform.

Of course VR is the future, have you seen the matrix?

We're focussing on sight and sound for now, scent and touch is next.

I sometimes think people forget what Virtual Reality actually means, and instead just focus on strapping a screen to your head.

Show us all your VR discussions of 1995 to 2010, then we can talk about it.
